I don't want to be a downer, but I've gotten items by mail with no charges assessed at the time, and no notice of any sort on the box, only to later get bills directly from Customs (in Miami, in my case). When I ignored one of them at first, they assessed a penalty and just kept billing.

I really don't know. The notices I got were WAY after I got the packages, so I had no idea what they were for at first. I was shocked. You may be okay, but you might have to wait and see for a bit. They weren't for an outrageous amount or anything, but they were duties charges.

Here in Canada, you must pay for the fees at the same time the package is being delivered or picked up. I am guessing you don't have to pay any fees.

Yes. I had gotten packages before from UPS or FEDEX for which I had to pay duty at delivery. These were packages shipped by mail and delivered by USPS, at different times and from different sellers. I had never, ever had to pay duties before on non-US packages delivered by mail. Maybe I was "selected" for some sort of random check. I have no idea. It hasn't happened again, but now I sort of always expect the other shoe to drop. You are probably safe.

^^I actually anticipated getting busted for this one. My last two purchased were from China and each time the seller (on their own) marked the parcel: "used bag" and had a lower price on the value. This time the seller had the full value ($1,200.00) written on the outside of the package = when I saw that I thought for sure I'll have to pay customs...

Oh well, I guess there's nothing I can do now but wait and see.

I've always wondered how the duty in the U.S. works. I've been thinking about buying some bags from this boutique in Italy, but no one can tell me how much the duty would be. I even contacted customs and they referred me to this chart that was supposed to tell how much the duty is, but the chart was so confusing it was impossible to figure out! When I called customs, they couldn't just give me an answer.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who can't seem to figure out US customs. It *seems* that if stuff is under 1k there isn't a duty? It seems like airport security--just sorta the luck of the draw.

I know lots of people that don't pay customs when buying through eBay - but you have to pay when buying from a store: let's say in Europe to the USA. I bunch of people have purchased from Balenciaga in Paris, and they have to pay customs apparently.

I've purchased two 1k+ bags from Asia = no customs

We'll see what happens on this latest one...

It was roughly 10% when I bought from Italy on a 1,300 bag. Of course, things change as this was a few years ago. Best bet would be to visit the subforum of the brand you want to purchase and ask the girls there. I did that with my Chloe bag, as many had purchased from luisaviaroma before and could give me a rough idea of how much I'd have to pay.

When I get stuff from individuals, I've never had to pay customs. The only time I had to pay customs was when I bought from a boutique overseas. Also, I believe it was also the country of origin for the Chloe bag which may or may not impact customs, duties, ect.

Interesting! My big purchases are from Hong Kong, so that might be why I've never gotten a bill.
