Default transaction off of ebay?

This has little to do with eBay but someone recently won something on ebay and I contacted them and said that if they weren't interested when they received the item that I would like to buy it for them. They contacted me yesterday with a reasonable price. My question for y'all is that she doesn't want to put it up as a listing and wants me to pay her through paypal. She has great feedback on ebay, but is there any protection for me at all in this transaction if we do not go through ebay and only paypal? Will the emails/our correspondence suffice should the situation get sticky? TIA for your answers!!

It depends. She may not be able to relist it simply because of eBay's new restrictions. If you pay through paypal you still have the same dispute system as you would if you had bought it on ebay, and if that works for you it might be fine. Have her send you an invoice on paypal and have her fill out the details of what you are getting, when it is being sent, etc... If you are comfortable with the seller and it might be fine.

I think the main reason eBay discourages deals off of ebay is because they don't get fees from transactions not on their website.

Thanks for the great advice! I definitely wouldn't have known/done any of what you suggested unless i had asked here!

No problem! Just make sure that you have what you are getting, etc... in writing and if she does it through the invoice in paypal, they will also have an official record of it too, so if you need to file a dispute on there you can show what you were supposed to get. I hope it works out--make sure that the seller is one with ample positive feedback!

I'd also check the status of her Paypal account. Make sure it's verified so it's attached to a bank account. More safety for you.

I've done transactions like this before we did part trade part cash for what I was selling. It worked well and both buyer and seller are still protected. Ita about having her invoice you with all the details

Checking to make sure that she is verified is a great idea! The more protections that you can make sure that you have, the better and that is a good one to have.

hi, am having the same predicament as well, cos the seller wants me to pay directly via paypal. have searched thru old threads, and there is some conflicting info (changes in policy i guess) so can i just confirm again that if there's a paypal invoice i'll be insured for the entire amount, and not just $200?? TIA!!

^The buyer protection amounts are only for eBay transactions. For off-Ebay, it is just how much they are able to recover from the seller's account.

Yikes didn't know that! I thought you were covered by PP if seller sent a PP invoice. I have done this quite a few times and luckily had no problems. I did a few questionable things before I came to this forum and started finding out stuff.. thanks everyone! Wonder if there is a place that would explain all this (about paypal covering only eBay transactions)???

^Yes, you can find it all in their user agreement. This is why even when paying for eBay transactions you have to make sure it is properly linked to be covered (used pay now button in Ebay or enter item number into Paypal)

What eBay restrictions? Someone can't relist an item they bought? Yah right!

For off-eBay transactions, you're only protected if the seller doesn't ship. If the seller ships a box of rocks to you, tough luck. There is also no Buyer's protection, though they say they'll try to recover as much as they can.

I'd suggest you to insist a proper but simple eBay listing and volunteer to pay for the Ebay listing and FVF fees so you can get the protection needed.

I have been doing this for a long time now (several years). I send my graphic design clients invoices from PP all the time, because obviously, I don't list it on *bay, but we both still have the protection of PP, regardless.

As much as *bay wants you to think that it's ONLY safe to deal through them, it isn't. That's what PP is for, IMO. So far, I have been doing this for a long time and haven't been burned (knock on wood).

Good luck.

thanks everyone. eeks, too scary to think that my money could go into a black hole, and from what i can gather from old threads, paypal doesn't seem very assiduous in getting money back for buyers.

anyway, asked the seller to let me go thru eBay, and his response was, er, well, there was no response, looks like he's decided to ignore me. he replied with amazing alacrity while i was submitting an offer/etc days ago.... oh well. not meant to be i guess. thanks anyway!
