Default Shipping to Canada

I need to send a package to canada, will they ask me to fill out a customs form at the post office? The value is for $100 so will the buyer be charged any fees?

This doesn't have to deal with eBay but I appreciate the help

I'm fairly sure that you will have to fill out a customs form. I don't know what the U.S. forms are like but in Canada they're easy to fill out. As far as duty goes, it depends what you are sending and where the item was made. Many of the items made in the U.S. are duty free for us. If it was made elsewhere though, they might have to pay duty although sometimes customs seem to just pass things through without charging. Sorry I can't be more definite.

Yes you will have to fill out customs forms. If you're not worried about scams you can declare it as used/gift with a lower value( up to $20.00) IIRC and they shouldn't be charged.
However if you need to cover yourself, you'll need to declare the full value, send priority with DC# and insurance.

anything declared at over 50$ will be fee'd by customs when it arrives in Canada -- 50$ is the exemption limit per day. sometimes stuff can be declared for higher and it won't be fee'd because the customs agent is lazy or not paying attention or just is in a really good mood. :P it's a hit or miss for my experiences!

I've talked with the buyer and am going to write "gift" on it but declare the full value.

This is my first time dealing with international shipping as the seller and I still want myself covered in case of loss

Fees (usually the GST and PST) are supposed to apply on all items entering Canada valued at $20.00 or more ($60.00 for a gift). These charges tend to be applied randomly so the buyer may or may not get charged. These are entirely the responsibility of the buyer and they should be aware of that. The customs form is easy to complete. USPS is the best shipper to use.

I agree, USPS for sure- the couriers all charge a tiered brokerage rate and it adds at least an additional $20 on a $100 item. Duty is exempt for all items made in North America but make sure you put the country of origin in the spot where it asks. It's easy to ship here

Item was shipped this morning through USPS but first class international air - everything went smoothly on my end until I asked for delivery confirmation and the mail clerk told me it's not available for international/or to Canada

Is this true?

If you use priority international, tracking is included (it's the insurance number or something that usually starts with CP and ends with US) but some people have found that the tracking isn't very good; however I have had something shipped to me priority with tracking and when I tracked it using Canada Post's website, it logged every step it took (even going through customs) -- I think there are less details if you track it through USPS's website.

No, that's not true- (s)he may have meant it's not available for the service you selected. I know that on our end, we can't get tracking or delivery confirmation on Air Mail shipments unless they are sent Expresspost (which is the same as EMS/Global Express).
