Default Question about handling returns (as a seller)

Hi everyone!
You may remember my first venture into selling on e-bay resulted in the buyer returning a purse. The day she recieved the purse, she sent me an e-mail stating she was returning it did not have "longchamp" woven into the canvas strap. The one I sold, being several years old, did not have this design feature. Admittedly, in my photos, you cannot see the strap very well, and I had no idea the design had changed. Being an e-bay newbie, I let her return the item and refunded her money.

My question is - my auction specifically stated no returns. I had no idea what to reply to her since for all I knew she had already put the purse back into the mail for return. So what do I do if the purse shows up at my house? Do I have to return the money? When you state no returns, is that legally binding?

If she paid by paypal, all she has to do is provide them with the dc number for the return. Once it shows you got it, PP refunds her. So either way she wins. You can tell her you won't refund until she mutually agrees not to complete the transaction so you get your FVF back.

I agree and send her a refund minus shipping before she files with paypal otherwise paypal will issues her a full refund then you'll be out of the shipping cost.

Actually, no, it is not legally binding. Most buyers will adhere to the rules stated in your listing, but if a buyer really wants to kick up a fuss and return an item, they will normally be allowed to by eBay. I'd rather deal with anything other than an unhappy buyer. I have had two returns the entire time I have been selling, because the buyers were newbies and truly had something else in mind - one bought lambskin thinking it was caviar leather, although the auction clearly stated otherwise. I accept returns on the basis of authenticity only; however, even though at the time I could have negged the buyer, I did not do so and accepted the return. This is each seller's individual decision. After weighing the options, I made the decision to relist and keep my 100% fb rating. I mutually withdrew from these transactions after issuing a full refund. I relisted each bag and made more the second time around. Hopefully, you will too. Good luck with this!

Same goes for me. Of all the designer handbags I have sold and other items (i.e. computers), I have NEVER, ever had a return. Reason? Most likely because not only am I VERY descriptive in all of my auctions, I include many, many photos and I never even bother with a return policy. If they have a problem, they'll contact me regardless of what my auction says.

If someone is dissatisfied with their purchase, or a computer arrives DOA, then I will still try and offer the best possible customer service I can to ensure they're satisfied. If that means a return, then so be it.

ITA. PayPal will side with her, so I'd have her mutually agree not to complete the sale so you can get your FVF back. I'd also refund her less the initial shipping cost, but if she really pursues it with PP they will refund that too.

tough question....if its already being sent I would issue a refund minus shipping & handling fees (if you clearly stated no returns, then you're at least entitled to what you put out to get it to her)

good luck

Thanks everyone!
Your replies kind of confirm what I suspected - as an individual seller you're screwed!

I did issue the refund minus the shipping, and filed a NPB to get my seller fees back. That part went smoothly.

I am now considering adding a return policy and stating that there will be a restocking fee, although this makes me sound like a store. I'm not a store, I'm just trying to make some room in my closet, and I don't like the idea of my good shoes and bags being pawed over by a sellers who can't make up their minds. I'm afraid this will eventually result in their being "shopworn" which will be unfair to the final buyer - esp. as this particular buyer returned the purse in a PLASTIC BAG, not the original box that I sent it out in.

I believe it! I once received a Chanel lambskin bag from the seller in a Priority Mail flimsy envelope. When I opened it, the bag was stuffed into a plastic Wal-Mart sack. When you purchase (or return) an expensive bag from anywhere, it should be properly packed and protected. The nerve!!
