I sold a pair of shoes on *bay, that the seller has been really excited about. She took a week to pay, as agreed to by me beforehand, as today is her payday.

I just saw that she had paid by Paypal's eCheck. This is the first time I've dealt with that particular payment method, and PayPal is telling me that it will take 7 to 9 working days to clear. I told the buyer yesterday that PayPal payments clear straight away (in my ignorance) and so I would ship today.

I will have to let her know that I can't ship until the money clears, but I'm afraid that she might leave me a negative if I wait two weeks to ship. I don't want to ship anything that expensive before the funds clear, but I don't know how to break the news so she wouldn't feel cheated.

just be truthful with her and let her know that you didn't realize the amount of time it would take.....ask her if shes OK with that and apologize....
thats all you can do....

Also, you might want to copy and paste the note from your PayP screen that says the payment hasn't cleared and not to ship. I have found that when buyers pay by eCheck is says "cleared" on their side, but it is not cleared on yours. This way, the buyer will understand that you are simply following PayP's rules, and not delaying shipment arbitrarily. Oh, and despite the 7 - 9 days noted on PayP, I've found that eChecks will usually clear within 3 - 5 days, so hopefully, this will be the case for you. Good luck!

The buyer would have seen "the seller will ship the item once the echeck clears" or to that effect, on the paypal page when she paid.
I would just email her and say that you did not realise echecks take 7 to 9 days to clear and that you will ship as soon as payment is cleared. You can also give her the due date for clearance that Paypal gave you. That too should be on her payment page.

^Just to add, when I have received echecks they all have cleared on the date Paypal gave.

Yes, just let her know that because she sent payment via e-check, it takes 4-6 days to clear and you will ship as soon as you receive notification of cleared payment. I don't think she'll leave you negative feedback over this.

Thank you, ladies. I'm putting together a message right now. It's good to hear that she most likely saw a notification in PayPal regarding shipping. Bah, I have to learn how to treat buyers like customers, not people with feelings!

I had a buyer buy a dress from me and she paid with e-check, except she didn't feel she needed to inform me of that, so basically, her first check did not clear and a second one did, it was like two weeks later, there was no communication with her whatsoever, I was so mad, but I didn't even leave her a feedback because what I really wanted to say wasn't very nice, so why bother?

Hopefully she will be just as understanding with you as you have been with her.

Whatever you do, do not ship anything until the echeck clears. Those things are notorious for bouncing. I would send a message to the buyer with the pasted message from PP about how long it will take to clear.

^^Agree with all posts above. Just be very nice and as-a-matter-of-fact about it. If for any reason she gets upset or fussy about it, you can always ask her to cancel or retrieve the payment and re-send a new one tied to her CC or debit card.

Of course, you do run the risk that she could just not re-send the payment, but a cancellation IS possible. Hopefully she just doesn't mind the wait. Good luck!

agree as well with the above posts... just be candid with your buyer ..

buyers/sellers appreciate hearing the truth when it comes to matters like

this... you &your buyer should be fine..

I'm not sure I understand your question. Is the seller asking you to cancel the transaction? Did he refund your payment?

How can she leave you negative feedback if you are following protocol? Anyway, if she did you can dispute with ebay.
Just inform her that she has paid with an echeque, it takes 7-9 days to clear and as soon as it does you will ship them.
I had this with someone who was really excited for Louboutin boots for his girlfriend. We were exchanging emails daily for a week! He wanted them the next day to gift her which I agreed to then it came up as eCheque. I told him the situation and he was disappointed but fine about it.

Just realised this thread is over 3 years old!
