I don't think that's right. Did you get this request through an email? If so, log back on the Paypal and there should be a link on the left side where you can report this email. I think it's called spoofmail or something like that. You can't miss it. Send it first and 9 times out of 10, it is something that they didn't send themselves.

This has happened to me too. People claiming to be Paypal email in the hopes of getting your personal info. Don't do anything until you get confirmation from them saying that it is from them. Paypal will even tell you directly that they never request personal information.

Play it on the safe side sister.

thats what i thought at first! but when i logged into my account, there were "items requiring your action" where i was supposed provide my SSN and address for credit check. i couldn't really believe it at first either, but it's legit o_O

right now i'm not allowed to close my account, send money, or request money. i think if i don't give them this info soon, they're going to lock my account...i want to call and argue, but i don't really know to say. im just in shock that they would do this.

I just do not understand why they would need this information? Your SS#??? No way! And why would they need a credit check?

I think that even when we do not consider PayPal a bank, they do work like one, and like any bank they will require the ss# for security and to know who to go after in case something goes wrong.

Maybe you can try calling paypal and take to a real person. The wait is super long, I've been stuck listening to muzak for up to 45 min, I just left the phone on speakerphone-but they were able to resolve my problem after a couple of calls.

I agree. I think this is perfectly normal. Just verification.

Unfortunately, when you sign up to use PayPal, in the user agreement, you agree to provide any information PP may require of you to verify your identity.

That particular clause in the PP User Agreement is listed here:

Some important paypal clauses to know about

Sometimes the spoof emails are savvy with links that look like you are logging into paypayl. Did you type in paypal from a different web browser?
