DEFINITELY verify the serial #!!! I'm speaking from personal experience...

I sold my iMac on eBay and, weeks after receipt, my buyer popped up and filed a claim. Her complaint was that the disc drive wasn't working. She also said that she took it to be repaired and when the repairman supposedly looked up the serial # he found that there was a previous issue with the disc drive that wasn't disclosed during the auction. She demanded a partial refund to cover the cost of repairs. I knew she was lying since I never had a single issue with the computer, so I asked her for the serial # and told her I would call AppleCare myself to verify (and I wanted to compare the number she provided to the one in my warranty records). All of a sudden her story changed and she said her repairman made a mistake and looked up the wrong #, and that no, there wasn't a record of repair issues on the computer I sold her. Shortly after that she closed her claim

Yes, email him back very sweetly and say you are sure he is honest but want to verify the serial number because you know yours was in perfect order and you just wanted to make sure, especially since you noticed he bought the same one form another seller the same day, you wanted to make sure there was no mistake which one was broken.

He may back off if he knows that you know he bought another one the same day.

Make sure to stress that you don't want to have a "mistake" since you know he is honest, give him plenty of room to back off gracefully.

UPS told me to tell the buyer not to send the item back as this voids the insurance. If the buyer sends the item back to you how do they know that it was not damaged upon return? Especially your buyer who wants to send it Priority Mail and not UPS.

They sent someone out to my buyer's house, to look at the damaged item. After this was done, they boxed it up and shipped the item back to me. I received the check a couple of days later.

I would tell your buyer that the you tested the camera before shipping and it worked, therefore you believe that it was damaged during shipment. Tell him that you filed a claim with UPS and he cannot send back the camera to you until UPS views the item. If he sends it back, this voids the insurance, and you will not be able to issue a refund. He must hang on to the box and packaging material, as they will want to see this also. When they are done looking at the camera, it will be sent back to you, unless you request otherwise. He will not have to pay to ship back the item.

I was lucky as my buyer cooperated with myself and UPS, but I can see where some buyers might cause problems.
My concern if he ships it back and it was broken during shipment the insurance claim it will be voided as how can they tell when it actually happened.Obviously if it was not broken when you shipped now it is .Either a)broken in shipment b) this person sees you are a new seller--pretty obvious by numbers, and knows you are easy prey.Sorry but this is all too common.I am not one for partial refunds as i see all too often giving one then all of a sudden same person lists the item with no issues. So now you are out that partial refund money -*-for no reason.Tell him --nicely-- he has to wait until you hear from UPS what they need to do,they need to see the situation so you can file a claim with them to get your money back as well if it was truly broken.

Sounds great.I agree the purse forum rocks!!! Just do NOT let him bully you, keep your cool and stay polite. If he is a buyer-reseller he should fully understand this possibly is a insurance claim and give you time to sort it out.Did you call UPS today to find out what needs to be done? That is your next steop call them then immediately email the man to let him know.Just stay in constant contact with him --through the ebay system , so it is on record with ebay too---so he does not feel ignored..IMO that is what upsets buyes the most is being or feeling ignored.Just let him know your plans so he sees you are doing what you need to do ...

I'm sorry your first sale experience had to go this way. As far as Ebay, you will learn alot along the way. There are many many shady people on there and hard to tell who they are from the good guys. As for your situation the advise given is great! Also, make sure to check the camera really well once received because he may also have been messing with it..i.e. taken a piece out he needs to fix another etc. Good Luck!

That was what my husband was afraid of. I haven't heard from the buyer since my last message , we will see what he says today. I already messaged him and was super nice, asked for the serial # and thanked him for his patience.

Thanks everyone!

You guys ready for something SUPER weird??

I logged in just now, and he left me positive feedback! Said the camera is awesome. Wtf?? He also responded to my (two) messages with "wondering if you are getting my messages through this system, I sent you one last night I do not think you have gotten."

Well, he changed his mind rather quickly, don't you think & left fb

The serial # was a very good suggestion from TPF'er

Lets keep our fingers crossed that you don't hear back.

OK here is his last message:

Last night about 11:30 pm, i finally found on google the way to reset the camera back to factory setting(DEFAULT SETTING) after thAT THE CAMERA WAS AWESOME,EVEN THOUGH I KNEW THE CAMERA WAS ALRIGHT I WANTED TO CHECK IN DAYLIGHT, THE PICS. WAS FINE, ABOUT THE SAME TIME I WAS SENDING THE MESSAGE I RECEIVE ONE FROM YOU ASKING HOW MUCH TO REPAIR CAMERA, INSTEAD OF SAYING IT STILL HAD A SENSOR PROBLEM AND ASK FOR A REFUND FOR REPAIR, I TOLD YOU THE CAMERA WAS FIXED IT WAS A SETTING PROBLEM, LIKE I SAID BEFORE TREAT PEOPLE RIGHT AND THE RESET WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF, I AM JUST SO GLAD I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY $45 TO SHIP THIS CAMERA BACK, CAUSE ITS AN AWESOME CAMERA. thanks. PS SINCE THIS WAS YOUR FIRST SELL I THOUGHT YOU WAS GETTING RID OF A DEFECTIVE CAMERA.AND REALLY DID NOT CARE ABOUT FEEDBACKS OR SELLING ANYTHING ELSE, BUT I AM SORRY FOR THAT.I LEFT A FEEDBACK SO YOU CAN GET YOUR MONEY. I LIKE THE SHOES YOU BOUGHT FOR $495.

How hilarious is that?? I am seriously LOL. Glad he likes my new CLs, esp since he just funded my next pair! And for the record, they were 399, the discount they were running doesn't show up anymore.

I seriously love you guys, without all the great advice I am sure this would have ended differently! Many, many, many thanks!

Even with feedback, they can still open a PayPal dispute against you.

Looks fine. I am glad he came through for you. I think he panicked when it did not work. We all get that way.

Well now that I have all these messages, including him saying it works great, I am not worried about a dispute. Is that naive?

I doubt you will hear any more from him now. I had a feeling it would start working correctly after you asked him the serial number.

All's well that ends well. Unless something changes, looks like you got a good first sale. Keep us posted if anything changes (like he turns states evidence and files a chargeback????)
