I agree with stylefly. $25 seems kind of steep especially if there is no guarantee the item will sell. I like Amazon's format where there are no listing fees and your item stays listed for 60 days. Their fees are kind of high, but you save $$ by not having to re-list your items a million times.

I suppose that it could be based on a listing price.
I still wouldn't pay $25 upfront
that number is just too high for a site that would likely have little to no traffic at the start

I must be alone in my hatred of the FVF. I understand why they use it. It has always felt like a punishment for making more money :) I hate watching my seller fees go up as my items sell.

What fee structure do think makes the most sense? The hosting (lots of data being stored and updated), support, admin moderators, authenticators, website trouble shooters, advertising and MUCH more must be thought about. I really want to make it an honest site, avoiding the chances of allowing scammers (eliminating them through enforced authentication).

I have done a few internet sites in the past, nothing this big (I will be paying someone else to do it). I am a power seller, with a strong back ground in sales and advertising. I have never done anything like this before- I need imput.

Feel free to even say that it's a bad idea. It seems like there is a strong need, and that if it's built right people will feel safe coming to buy and sell.

I'm with Tatertot and Skigirl, done with eBay owned Paypal.

I initially thought the $25 sounded steep, but the more that I think about it, I'm paying eBay more than that now (er, uh I mean WAS, before I was restricted!)

List up to 4 images
4 images of a Chanel bag just isn't enough. I like using Auctiva and posting 20 images.
Cheers

I believe that auctiva and other such sites could still be used. It has more to do with dedicated band width if I understood correctly. I NEVER post less than 12 photos!

When buying a bag I need to see it from every possible angle! I know my buyers want the same!

I am hoping to be done with eBay and PayPal soon. Just need to get my website finished and back up online. Don't know how much traffic I'm going to get, but I'd rather pay $50 a month to the people who host the site and have no listing or FVF than give another penny to Feebay and PayPal. I'm only still using them a little to get rid of some items fast to pay off credit cards!

Hmm, I've been discussing this with my mother and she seems pretty interested in building something like this, with a 1% fee (for the value of the product before the end of the auction) and 1% after sale. So on a $2500 bag, that's $25 upfront, $25 after, still left with $2450. Either that or monthly membership fee and .25% listing fee. Whichever is more affordable for the business I guess.

I don't know, it's just at drawing board stage atm, keep posting your ideas though, I'll pass them on...

I just wanted to remark that I posted very early in this thread, and the posts that have come after mine have amazed me. We have some extremely good minds in tPF and the thought that is going into this gives me such hope. Someone is going to do this eventually, and so far, the way this is taking shape is absolutely awesome. I too am a power seller, and have owned my own business for quite some time. I think that we are more than capable of outlining and then putting this site plan into action. The reality of it would be a dream to most of us. I am with you 100%! BTW, you are certainly not alone in your hatred of the FVF, at least as structured by eBay. I sell mostly Chanel handbags with a normal of ending price of around $2000, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have been spending close to $150 per bag on fees alone with eBay.

Not everyone sells or buys $2500 bags. I have never had a final value fee and listing fee equal to $25 so that is incredibly steep for me!

I do have listings on ioffer and the nice thing about their setup is that it is free to list for however long you want as long as you are active in your account. Then when the item sells there is a fee, the fee is calculated based on the total amount that changed hands, this includes the shipping fees. At first I wasn't a fan of being charged a fee on top of the shipping fees but if you go take a look at the listings there people aren't charging high shipping fees like a lot of sellers do on feebay. Perhaps a cap fee of $25 is better but to pay $25 prior to it selling would probably turn a lot of people off.

The other problem is coming up with the initial investment money which is why I think some are suggesting prepaying listing fees, so a thought is to create a membership fee which you could pre-collect and those members could receive special discounts or premium listings or something like that. Memberships might be a way to get some start up money.

Just my two cents. I agree feebay stinks and so does ioffer right now, but there are alot of good people trying to make ioffer better it just isn't happening very quickly and until they put their foot down on all the darn fakes they aren't going to see this area of retail (handbags, etc.) flourish.

This makes perfect sense. I guess though, that the owner would need some way of earning money though, just incase the item doesn't sell.

1% really isn't that bad:

$600
1% = $6

But 0.5% would be better, I dunno, I'd have to really sit and think of ways that make this affordable without ripping people off. We need a charity - non-profit organisation.

Why don't you guys state what you think is reasonable and the average price for selling your bags.

I know my mum also has a different payment method to PP, it's very good and doesn't cost much at all - if anything.
