Bingo. Exactly what I was thinking.

Unfortunately there is no litmus test for ethics in the medical profession.

Despite her degree/qualifications, she's just like anyone of us: human. And as humans we're often flawed, full of idiosyncracies, narcissism and all those other lovely adjectives that plague the human race.

I never hold the medical fraternity up to too high a standard and I'd caution everyone else not to as well.

I know there are good and bad apples everywhere. I may be old fashioned in this view but I do hold professionals, particularly those who have have been entrusted with lives, education, life savings etc to a higher standard. That some don't step up to or abuse that standard, doesn't negate that the standard needs to be there.

I'm sorry but that kind of naivete is not going to stand you in good stead.

Here in Australia we've had numerous cases of teachers, both male and female, become involved with their students in a sexual manner. Numerous. Cases that have come to court - names and faces for all and sundry to see.

The same can be said of those in the medical profession. I have witnessed quite a few cases, in this case males, do things to their female patients and the matter has ended up in court. In one case, the guy was a physio or something, gave his patient an internal examination and jokingly said words to the effect of "Men like women like you who are tight". I'm sure you can Google this sleaze.

We live in *very* different times now. Teachers and doctors, you would once hold in high esteem, but from what I'm seeing and reading about, there are more and more breaching the rules of ethical behaviour. Personally I would never allow my female child alone with a male teacher or male doctor and I speak from experience.

And you mention life-savings. You have heard of Bernie Madoff yes? The Jewish man who screwed over his own fellow Jews, including Holocaust survivors. You thing men of his ilk are the exception?

Its not naivete. I know its out there. And worse. What I am saying is that I expect them to perform to a higher standard. And when they abuse the power and/or control they have been given, I am more seriously offended. JMHO.

I expect a lot too. I expect that if I leave a child with a male teacher, he wont try and seduce her. I expect that if I were to visit a male Physio, he wont make crude remarks whilst sticking his finger in places he shouldn't [not that I'd ever allow that to happen]. I expect too that if I go to a financial planner, he will act in a professional manner - just as many Holocaust survivors did with Mr Madoff.

I expect Judges who have one of the highest places in society to act ethically and morally - sadly in Australia there are a few who have let me down.

We are humans, not Angels. And therefore we're capable of wrong-doing. I don't believe there is anyone in society [I mean people in places of authority] who can be trusted implicitly.

And just remember all the thousands of children who were put in the care of Nuns and Priests in the not so distant past who were sexually abused. People who supposedly fear the wrath of God.

I myself have personally experienced what it's like when you put your trust in a male only to have your innocence lost. The one good thing that came out of it is that it has made me a thousand times more wary now. If I were to ever have a daughter, I would NEVER leave her alone with any man, not even a close relative. And who is to blame? The purpetrators of these sickening and vile acts.

Just remember we live in a different society now. A society where even a girl's own father can look at her in a sexual manner. Seriously as a society we're going down hill when a girl can't even trust her own father. A friend of mine worked with a guy who got caught uploading child porn on his pc at work a few years ago. They later found out the pictures were of his own daughters. True story. There are some sick &^%s out there. I caution everyone to be on their guard always.

It is true that we live in a different society now; however, as sad as it is, lying, cheating, stealing, and sexual perversion are not exclusive to modern times. In EVERY generation, there have been fathers who molested their own daughters; there have been those who have lied to innocent people in order to benefit financially; there have always been student-teacher affairs. The only difference is the speed and pervasiveness of the media. We live in a society where these dispicable acts are sensationalized and these situations are exploited for the sake of ratings...that is the true difference.
However, as much bad as there is in the world, I would argue that it is NOT the dominant force. If this were so, most good people would have already been murdered off and society would cease to function. There are still those who want to do good in the world.
Professionals should not be written off as "bad" just because the media has provided us with provocative fodder. For example, there's nearly 7 million teachers/school personnel in the U.S., even if there were 100 stories of sexual relationships between faculty-staff/students, that would hardly be enough reason to view the profession as being the mecca for sexual predators.
I believe a person should be wary; however, I can't imagine living my life in fear and suspicion.

At the core, society is not that different than years or ages ago. Abuse and incest have always existed and have been and still are acceptable in some places or cultures. What has changed is how we interpret it and deal with it, IMO.
