There is a bag that I REALLY want that was listed on ebay. I put in a "best offer" that the seller refused (she wanted more than $100 over the retail price for it). The listing ended without a buyer. I emailed her asking if she was going to relist it and I offered a price in the middle. She said that she would relist the bag....but then sent me a "bill" directly from paypal for the bag. She did that without relisting it on ebay. I emailed her again saying that I wanted the protection from ebay....she wrote back that all paypal transactions were protected......
Does this sound right? Should I buy the bag outside of ebay? |

She sounds dodgy - I advise buying it through ebay. I don't think Paypal protects you if you decide to outside of ebay.

You will be protected only if item is not delivered if you use PP alone. You need to go through ebay and pay with PP to be protected in case you want to file a SNAD or something..
How is her feedback? If it is someone that looks trustworthy and has great FB for selling bags like yours, you might consider buying it, but it's a roll of the dice these days to do off-ebay transactions. Can you provide the link? |

Seller does not want to pay relist fees.
Perhaps you could offer to pay them as you are the one who requested the relist. Otherwise just watch & wait for her to relist on her own. |

Simple... I would NEVER transact outside of Ebay. Too many scammers, not enough protection... too many variables to go wrong.

I've done transactions outside eBay as a buyer and as a seller. Usually, I like to deal with buyers/sellers I am familiar with (i.e. that have purchased from me in the past or the sellers I have purchased from in the past) and had great experience with. As a seller, I don't mind doing transactions outside eBay as it saves me quite a bit in FVF but then again, I know I am good for it.
If your gut is telling you not to go through with it, don't. |

I don't recommend it, either. I did it once and I was sorry I did. Not only was the bag not as described, I couldn't leave feedback for it, nor could I get in touch with the seller through ebay about it. I lost out and learned my lesson the hard way.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me and you said it yourself she's trying to get more than it's worth. I would just wait for another to come along.

I don't understand why most of you guys against the transactions off Ebay. I can see it is riskier for buyer if the seller is dishonest or untrustworthy. But not ALL sellers doing transaction off Ebay are scammers.
As a seller, I did the transaction off Ebay twice. For first transaction, I reduced the price and passed the saving from Ebay final fee to my buyer. I didn't make any more money. The transaction went well. The buyer didn't complain anything to me. For second transaction, I made some money and buyer was happy. Was I a scammer? ![]() From my knowledge, if you are buying via Ebay, you are more protected. You can file a claim to Ebay if the item not as described or non-received. For Paypal, you are protected ONLY for non-delivered item Therefore, I suggest you read the seller feedbacks, if she/he looks trustworthy, go for it. You can save about 10% off the listing price. If you do not feel safe, just pay more so you can sleep through the night. ![]() Conclusion, do you want to play safe or do you want to save money?
