I believe that, if you leave them a positive even with just a '.' or something, and then add a comment after it, the buyer can't claim it's a negative positive. I've seen it around a few times, though I don't know if eBay's removed it since I saw it.

Still it counts as a positive on the buyer's record. After a while, these positives are buried and can't be read w/o going back pages and pages. Eventually it looks like the buyer's FB is perfect. So best just not to leave any FB, IMO.
Ebay seriously needs to reconsider the FB system.

This is exactly why having an eBay business is enough to give me an ulcer! I had a nightmare experience a few years back where the buyer mutilated the bag upon receipt, and I had to fork over some money to settle the dispute...

Most recently I sold a David Webb ring that was upon shipment, in PERFECT condition! The buyer received it, and a few days later, filed a dispute (and then escalated to a claim) stating that the ring was received with a broken stone. The buyer wanted several thousand dollars to replace the stone. (The ring was sold for approx $4000- retail value closer to $8000.) I allowed a lower partial refund, even though I am throroughly convinced it was a scam A complete nightmare that devoured the better part of a month. A waste of my time and the resolution cost me almost my entire commission. Yuk!

I will say, that for the most part, I have an easy time with the buyers... It just takes that one nasty person to ruin your mood!

Any recommendations to help prevent such scams??

Just an update and a question. I never heard back from my Buyer. Not a word. Since she had to file something within 45 days form the date she paid, would that not be today since she paid on Aug. 26th?

Let's hope she is not reading here, but I believe that is right. 45 days from date of payment. Unless she is going to do a CC chargeback - that gives you longer I think. You could call PP to be sure (or look it up somewhere on PP online site). Keep us posted and here's hoping this works out for you.

Styletherapytx.. out of curiousity was this ring insured?

Could you not have filed a claim with the carrier?

There are lots of loopholes in ebay, if the buyer knows the policies well enough they can maneuver their way to get lots of free stuff.....
