Default buyers and setting a reserve
Before you bid on something, when you see that the reserve has not been met, are you hesitant to bid on it? Does it dissuade you from bidding at all?

Also, does anyone know if ebay charges you more to list an item with a reserve price?

Thanks in advance!!

It really depends. If it is not close to what I would generally pay then no problem.Yet if it is at what I would give,I go away.At times if I am really interested i may email the seller and ask the reserve price -completely optional if you want to give it out though-.This is a way to get what you want or you can also choose the option to start it at the lowest you will accept and pray it goes up,that is what I always do.Yes reserve is a different level,it cost more to list plus a higher final vaule fee I believe as well.

I avoid auctions with a reserve. In fact I don't think I have ever bid on one come to think of it...

I say if you want a certain amount for the item use a Buy It Now.

Auctions with a reserve turn me off, but if I really am interested in the item I'll still put my bid in at the last minute.

I already have a set price for what I'm willing to pay in any eBay auction, so if I see that I have not met the reserve, I never feel compelled to try and bid again to see if I can meet the reserve.

I think it's helpful if someone does have a reserve that they state their reserve price in the auction. And yes, of course eBay charges for everything -- here are the reserve fee prices:

Reserve price FEE
$0.01 - $199.99 $2.00
$200.00 and up 1% of reserve price (up to $50

you know most people actually like the preference of buy it now over auction. With reserve it should not matter if people know the worth of the item. Personally, I do not understand the point of the reserve, you might as start your auction at that price. If someone really wants it though they will bid it up if they can . But if they are the only bidder or it does not get as high as the reserve , without a buy it now no one will win it, and it sort of defeats the purpose of selling .

I agree if this. Why keep the reserve price hidden if you are unwilling to sell it for less? Might as well start the bidding at that price. Of course I understand that some sellers might be hoping that a buyer (and only bidder) might placed a bid that surpass their expectations.

I noticed that Fashionphile is notorious for setting reserves. A lot of their items end without a bidder or the reserve was not met.

I usually skip reserve auctions. Especially when I email the seller and directly ask how much the reserve is. I know it's up to them to tell me but I prefer to be straight forward.

I don't like reserves, but whether I bid or not depends on the item, the starting bid, the BIN (if there is one), and the seller. Depending on the price at wish you want to sell an item, listing it via auction format with a reserve can be cheaper than listing with a BIN only, especially when you take FVFs into consideration. I think there are many, many people who don't bit or BIN when they see a high starting bid or BIN, but who go ahead and bid when the starting bid is low. As a seller, if you list a very expensive item using a low starting bid to encourage bidding, then using a reserve is the only way to make sure you won't sell a $1K bag for $50, which could happen given how low prices have drop in the past year. Gosh, that would suck!

I usually stay away from listings with reserve. I have made a lot of purchases from eBay, and I probably only bid on items with reserve less than five times in the past ten years.

I find them annoying for the reasons above but if I really wanted something I would still bid. Fashionphile is really irritating with their resrves because even if you are the highest bidder and the reserve isn't met they don't give you the chance to meet the reserve and win the item, which now completely turns me off their items

^^ alij78 -- What do you mean by "they don't give you a chance to meet the reserve and win the item" ?

Either your bid is below or above the reserve, and that determines whether you win or not, right?

Yup as soon as I see it has a reserve.. i leave. I like a good deal and most the time reserves are too high. ALSO I hate when the seller wont tell you the reserve? Only time she told me its against ebays policies to tell me! HAHA

Side question - if an item ends without the reserve price being met, can the seller offer a second-chance offer?

Meaning is there any the seller can see what the high bidder's maximum bid is and then offer to sell if for that amount?

^^I believe so

EDIT actually I know for a fact because it happened to me once. Seller said reserve was for 2000 I bid 1500. A couple days later I got a second chance offer for 1500.
