Default Black polish coming off Chanel purse from eBay...

Hi All,
First I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful advice I've read on this forum. I've never posted... just lurked

So...

I purchased what looked like a wonderful Chanel Jumbo Flap Bag on eBay. I don't want to list the seller's name just yet in case this is common practice on ebay and considered acceptable. I've purchased only one other black Chanel bag on ebay (from a purse forum member) and it was perfect.

Nowhere in the listing did it mention that this bag was reconditioned or polished. It instead listed the bag as being in almost new condition, hardly ever being used by the original owner after being purchased at a Chanel Boutique.

I used the bag for the first time this past weekend at a luncheon and to my dismay, a friend mentioned that I had black marks all over my white shirt. I asked the waiter for a white towel and started rubbing the bag after realizing that's the only place the marks could have come from. The white towel was BLACK after only a few swipes over the purse!

I've worked on the bag for two days now and there's still polish coming off. Is there any way to remove this?

I contacted the seller, who told me that they had the Chanel Boutique in NYC professionally polish the bag a few months ago, as they do all the bags they sell, and have never had a problem. They offered to pay my drycleaning bill, but this still does not solve the problem of not being able to wear the purse with anything other than a black outfit.

Thank you in advance ladies

Michele

Is there a Chanel boutique you can contact and verify that they polish the bags and ask what they use/why it's coming off? Or maybe on the Chanel subforum... I've never heard of this happening with Chanel before, which makes me wonder if the seller used something like shoe polish to make the bag look more "new.

Good luck and welcome to tPF

Simply unacceptable for me!!
Imagine you were wearing your $$$$ designer dress and its all runed????
What did they use?! Shoe polish???
You should return the bag to the seller if you paid lots of money. Hopefully you can still open Paypal dispute.
After 2 days still color coming off sound very fishy to me.
Imagine claening it off rest of your life or even if you want to re-sell it you will be in trouble!

Thank you ladies!

I paid $1450 for the bag, well worth it if it was indeed in the condition listed SANS the polish!
I can definitely contact the boutique I mainly buy from and ask... didn't even think of that... doh!
I try and give people the benefit of the doubt, but this is crazy. It does seem like they fibbed and just used shoe polish, although it doesn't smell like polish, which is the only thing throwing me for a loop. I know when my hubby gets his shoes polished I can smell it.

I would want to be totally sure the bag is authentic now. Once you have checked that it may help you decide whether or not to keep the bag. If the seller has offered to pay cleaning she may be ok with a refund..

That's too bad! That happened to me with an Hermes I bought. I didn't get polish on me because I think my seller used magic marker. I did keep it and I am using it today, but I was disappointed that I won't be able to resell it if I want.

I hope everything works out for you!

MAGIC MARKER? On a HERMES? Granted I don't know anything about Hermes (except that I could never dream of owning one) but to use magic marker just seems totally nuts.

I would return the bag...the seller is obviously not being completely upfront about it. And resell would be an issue, or even wearing the bag for that matter...that's a lot of money to only wear it with black clothes :o)
Good luck.

I am really sorry this happened. I think it is unacceptable and some kind of reparation is needed on the part of the buyer. I have had a vintage flap reconditioned and don't recall polish coming off and I am sure I would have noticed. Dry cleaning doesn't really get to the issue and I would be direct in asking the seller why the 'reconditioning' wasn't disclosed and take it from there. . . my experience with trustworthy sellers is that they are open about any reconditioning, treatment etc and will always mention it. Do let us know what follows - I hope it is good news.

Do not so anything else to the bag or she is going to refuse the return.

I would file a SNAD...

And in case anyone wonders - No-Shoe-Polish is my ID! I lost a snad for it and it is an absolute pita proving snads.
