Default Additional Shipping Costs - are you kidding?

Help!

I purchased a beautiful Dooney & Bourke bag from eBay last saturday, they accepted my offer of $85. I asked before i bid how much shipping would be and was told $15 for first class or $30 priority. I went with first class because im not really in a hurry for it and it would save me a few $. Im in the UK by the way so it was more for international shipping.

I expected to get a notice of shipping in the last few days but nothing came. This morning i got up and i've got an email saying that they under estimated the shipping costs and i can have the bag for an additional $20. If i don't want the bag they will issue me with a full refund.

When i asked about shipping costs i wasn't told that they were chageable or an estimation - i figured they do what most sellers do (or at least what i do) and go to the post office and weigh it or weight it at home and work it out on the post office website.

I really want the bag but cant beleive the shipping cost we agreed has more than doubled. And why tell me 5 days after i bought the bag? I thought it would be on it's way by now.

I ship from the USA regularly and have never had to pay so much shipping :( i feel really bummed out about it. I wanted this bag to be on it's way! and they tell me it hasn't even left the USA!

Do i have any recourse or am i going to have to pay?

I'd ask for the refund. 5 days to get back to you = bad seller.

Plus telling me one price before i buy and then another after i bought is misleading :(

if i mis-quote on shipping i just suck it up and put it down to experience, i would never ask for more money.
i can't see how it was to be $35 to send first class though, i've had bags come from the states via express and priority, and that was only $37 ish

Thank you LadyIsobel! - Same here, when im the seller i just accept that i misquoted and pay the extra out of my own pocket.

The initial quote was $15 for first class or $27 for priority. I went for first class as i wasnt in a hurry for it.

Then I've got a message from the seller saying they can only send it via priority because of the size and thats going to be an additional $20 on top of the $15 i'd already paid. So $35 all together.

I've sent a message saying i will pay an additional $12 on top of the $15 i've paid to equal the initial $27 for priority they had quoted.

I dont understand where all the new prices have come from? did they not actually quote for the bag i wanted or were they just guessing? so confused!

What should i do? I think i am being generous offering the additional $12 because even eBay Live help say i shouldnt have to pay anything other than what they quoted me.

I don't see how the bag would cost that much to mail to the UK. Really. Most sellers (the good ones anyway) suck it up and pay the shipping out of pocket if they don't charge enough. It is their mistake and not part of the original agreement. To be super honest, it sounds like your seller already has other plans for the bag and is hoping that you will back out of the agreement.

How awful that they would do that!! I would have never contacted for additional money! That's just wrong.

wow... that's no good. that's daylight robbery! i think they're trying to make some extra cash off you... stand your ground and tell them you know the shipping rates because you've gotten purses shipped from US many times.

Thanks everybody! I just wanted to make sure i wasn't going crazy. Like i said before when i sell things if i get the shipping price wrong i pay for my mistake.

Im starting to wonder whether i should just get a refund and then buy something else from a seller who won't try and get extra $ out of me :( x

When you do get a refund, ask for a few extra dollars to cover the paypal fees on your side--you shouldn't have to pay for her errors.

^^ lol, the buyer won't get hit with paypal fees

i think you should stand your ground and tell her you will report her as a non-performing seller. she should have to suck it up and pay out of pocket for misquoting.

It depends on how they do it, I think. If they just hit "send money" and the email address, there will be fees. Make sure then that she goes the official refund route.

Depending on how heavy the item is, and what country it's from, it very well could have cost them $30 to ship it (@ 4 pounds) if they are shipping from the states.

I agree they should just take a hit though, they quoted a price that they are now trying to renege on. Doesn’t make for a lot of repeat customers that way. So it comes down to how bad you want the bag really.

If you *really* want the bag, haggle with them on additional shipping. Offer them half of what they want, so $10. To avoid headaches, they may just accept and you may get the bag you want.
