patent has its pros and cons just like lambskin. Patent is more scratch resistant, but any colour transfers or wet stains are permanent, so keep it out of the rain and avoid wearing colours or fabrics that will leave colour marks on it. I've got a couple of pen marks and it looks like colour from the ribbon on my diary has rubbed off on the leather and on the zipper and I've not been able to remove them from my pale pink wallet :(
lambskin is better in that you can remove colour transfers if you clean it off immediately. It's more durable than lambskin used on Chanel bags (or so I'm told), you can use waterproofing spray on the leather (like Collinil) to reduce water damage to the leather, but it's definitely not water proof so you still have to be careful with it.
