mother's day- ipod deals? help!

are there any good deals out there for a 4 or 8 GB ipod nano? i was thinking of getting one for my mom. i know smartbargins and target offer deals for refurbished ones but i'm inclined to stay away from those. i don't know if i being overly cautious; thoughts?

these are refurbished, too, but they're from directly from apple, so should come with some type of warranty!

thanks! are almost all the deals out there for refurbished ones? anyone have experience with refurbished ipods? i'd really like to purchase a brand new one but i guess there are no real discounts out there?

I doubt ipods have any discounts because they are brand name and an electronics item. They aren't going to be reduced drastically and I've never seen them go anywhere for less than retail. Sort of like buying a Wii. Price is not going to be any cheaper unless the system gets older. Sometimes they have a get some small item free but that is it.

It's a very popular item from a brand that strictly controls their pricing. You're not going to find a major deal on a brand new one.

Every deal that I've seen is refurb only. Unless you either:
- know someone eligible for an employee or student discount (3-10% off), or
- have an old ipod to trade in (10% off)
there are no discounts on ipods except for their once a year sales (typically Black Friday, discount is ~5-10%). Some stores will sell them for at most $5-7 less (e.g. Target, Costco), but that's the biggest discount that you'll find.

I'm not sure where you're at but you can try craigslist.org if you're in a large city. I see people selling them brand new a lot of the time for a discount. Most of these people won it at a conference or something so they'll sell it for pretty cheap. HTH!

I work at a large electronics retailer and am also a big fan of Apple products, and this information is all true. Apple writes their retailers into contracts stating that Apple is allowed to dictate their prices on their products in exchange for allowing the retailer to carry them, which is why iPods are always the same price (more or less, may vary by a few dollars) everywhere. Unless you want a refurbished one, you're probably going to have to pony up retail.

I purchase two refurbished Ipods directly from the Apple website. It's been over a year, and have had no problems with them. The reason I decided to go refurb is because one was for my 12 year daughter who is not so careful with her things. It has gone through much abuse so far. The other is for my vehicles stereo system. It has withstood extreme heat and cold, being plugged in the glove compartment 24 hours a day.

some companies get discounts on apple stuff. You can call an apple store and ask them to look through their book for your company. I know for sure that Abercrombie and Gap get discounts and I think it's like 6% but that's better than nothing!! Oh and as far as I know, no more student discounts on ipods. Military and Government get 6% off too!

usually the things that get discounted in college bookstores are old generations - many probably still have some of the previous version of the ipods in stock since most people don't buy their ipods from their college bookstore. i know that was the case at the UGA bookstore - they still had old-generation ipods in stock in the past month or two, discounted about 30%

one of the best kept secrets - amazon! :) the discount used to be greater, but you can still get the 4GB in silver for 134 (retails for 149) and no tax (unless you live in one of the few states that get charged tax from amazon). best part is if the price goes down in the next 30 days you can get a price adjustment. wont get there in time for mother's day though...
