I looking to get a Macbook but if I buy it in the store they can up grade the memory to 4GB but the hard drive would stay at 250 Gb. If I buy it on line I could upgrade to 320Gb hard drive, but I will have to pay more on tax and sit home to sign for it. Do I need that much hard drive? I'm very new to this stuff. I want use the computer to show my paintings and photos.what are your suggestions? I can't afford the Macpro.

how much is it to upgrade the ram and memory (plus tax) online vs just getting the memory upgraded at the store?
I always think the more you can get the better it is, so if it's a small amount i'd just go with whatever you can do online. if it's a lot, since it seems you're on a budget, i'd just stick with getting the memory upgraded in store. however, if you plan on loading it up with high quality photos and paintings and plan on using programs like photoshop you'll want the best computer you can afford. |

It's not that big of a difference money wise. I just wanted to go and see what they suggested in the store since I'm new to this. Do you think that if I have iworks installed and mobile me with the up grades that will be good enough for what I want to do. I would also be adding their one to one service and apple care.

It really depends on what you are going to do with your computer. Are in into photography or computer graphics? Then the larger hard drive will be good. Are you just using it for simple word processing, itunes, and net use?
Also, are you going to upload all your music? I have a 500GB laptop, macbook pro, but I store a lot of photography, and graphic design work on it. So 250 is okay if you just want normal everyday use, I guess is what I am trying to say! :) |

To be honest, I'd shoot for the bigger hard drive because bigger hard drive=more storage space. As a gauge, how big was your hard drive on your old computer?

I agree with the ladies - go for more hard drive. If you ever decide you want to store movies...they take up a huge amount of space.

Don't buy the RAM from Apple-it's such a ripoff. My DBF works in the tech industry-he got a base MBP and then just bought some RAM off newegg.com for about 1/3 the price.
250GB is already A LOT. Are you going to need all your photos on there all the time? You should probably put some money into getting an external hard drive which would allow you to backup your photos/paintings, and then also store the ones you aren't going to be showing at the time. My DBF swears by his Apple Time Capsule. It isn't cheap, but you can get 1TB of storage for $300 (and it works as a wireless router too) If you don't want to go with the Apple brand, there are lots of external hard drives available. If you order online, you can use the educational store to get the student discount. They don't check, and you save $50-100 on the laptop. |

If you buy ram that is not from Apple, make sure it doesn't invalidate your Apple Care Protection Plan (if you are getting one).

^^A word of caution on the Apple Time capsule is that they are known to die right around 18 months. I was really set on getting one and did some research on it and that was the one complaint I kept reading was that their lifespan seems to be 18 months.
