Reading my Kindle

DH and I just bought a kindle for each of us and we both love it! Positives- lightweight, easier to hold than a book, you can easily and quickly look up a word you don't know, you can shop for books right from your Kindle no computer required, it turns off by itself after 10 minutes of non use, it automatically saves your place no bookmark required, you can save books on a memory card so there are no a million of them taking up every flat surface of your house.
Negatives- You can't tell how many pages are left, you have to be much more careful about where you lay it down than you do a book and worry about someone stealing it. (although I am guessing it wouldn't work for the thief since it is already registered to you and you would report it stolen, at least he/she wouldn't be able to buy any more books).

Overall I really love it. Anyone know if it is okay to bring to the beach? Is there a protective cover you can buy so no sand gets in?

A lot of people just put it into a Ziploc type bag.

That is actually a great "low tech" idea. Thanks!

It will be great to see reviews on both.
We've had our Sony readers now for about a week and so far, I love it! The only issue ... you can't access the Sony bookstore online from my computer (which is a MAC), so I have to use my BF's PC (the software doesn't work on a MAC). Otherwise, it's a great device. Very easy to read. I can definitely see myself making alot of use of it over the years (and it will save on space ... no more books piling up everywhere!). I thought I would miss the feeling of cracking open a real book ... but I'm not disappointed at all.

We also found a website that has alot of books for free that are now public domain. You can download many different versions (epub, pdf, kindle, etc.,) ... check it out if you're interested ...

http://www.feedbooks.com/

We had ordered them from the US (we're in Canada) because the only version you can get in Canada is the silver one. The ones we ordered at the dark blue version which is a nice contrast to the screen.

My friend keeps telling me she wants one of these so badly... I guess I am a little old fashioned, I really love my bookshelves and having my favorite books on them. I read a lot, but I also love to share books with people, and to borrow from others. Someone was telling me for books it was cheaper on the Kindle, but that isn't really true, they still seemed to be just as expensive as a regular paperback. If the costs were lower, I might consider it.... until now... I am sticking with the paper versions!

I love the feel of a real book in my hands, and love all the books I have in all my book shelves.

On the other hand, I thought an iPod was stupid and I cannot live without it. I am saving up for a Kindle.

I really appreciated this thread

Anyone else have a Kindle? anyone have the 2.0 on pre-order? I am dying to get a Kindle, I love to read but I have books everywhere! Three huge bookshelves overflowing with books. I think this would be a great alternative and a way to get rid of all those bookshelves. I think I could get used to it.

Bumping this thread, wondering how the Kindle fares in sunlight for reading? And do any of my fellow Canadians have one- if so, how complicated is it to take advantage of the features?

I have the newest kindle and loooove it! Great for sunlight; it really is just like reading a paperback.

The kindle is great for outdoor reading; there is no glare. The kindle has no backlight and it really is just like paper.
I am taking advantage of all the free books available........interesting mix of trash & classics! I try to buy one book a month; that's what I used to do at the bargain bin at the book store.

Im not a HUGE reader, but I do indulge in a good book every so often. I had looked at the Kindles for quite some time, but didnt like the size. I was browsing itunes one day and realized that there was a free Kindle app for my iphone! Very easy to use and I can still keep everything in one device. It's great!
For anyone that has an iphone, but is considering a kindle, look at the app first to see if it suits your needs.

I love my kindle - especially if you travel, it's amazing to be able to bring a few dozen books on a long trip. In your purse! And download more along the way. At home, I tend to use the sample feature a great deal - you get the first 20-30 pages free and then if I want to read it, I'll just reserve it at the library.

As noted above, the screen is very easy on the eyes, and fine to read outside. I wish it came with a built in light/cover, but hopefully a future version. For those of us getting on in years, it's nice to be able to change the font size up a bit at the end of a long day.

Another great feature is you can have multiple users (I think up to 6) on the same account, so if you have several readers in your family or among very close, trusted friends, you can all download the same books and only pay once. Of course, you have to trust them not to go on a shopping spree with your Amazon account, but I've gotten some amazing books that I wouldn't have found otherwise (and have shared my addiction to a few favorite authors with family) this way.

I love my kindle 2 - It is an addictive luxury - can't speak highly enough about it.

I would not take mine swimming - if you drop it in the tub, OMG!! watch your money float away - I can't imagine it surviving a dip.
