So if the Kindle ever goes out of style/becomes outdated, can you save the books as electronic files to your desktop? How are files backed up? And can the E-Files only be read on the Kindle, or are they like .pdfs?

Just last night, my BF and I each ordered the Sony ebook reader (we were debating between the Kindle, iLiad (?) and the Sony one. I can't wait to get it! I love reading, but we only live in a 1050 sq. foot condo so there's not alot of room for book storage. I, too, love the feel of an actual book in my hands, but I think this is a great option for space issues.

Let us know how you like it. :)

It will be great to see reviews on both.

Stephen King wrote a review of the Kindle a while ago in Entertainment Magazine. Here is the link if you are interested.

I really want to get one. I will be watching this thread to see the reviews.

I got myself a Kindle last year. It's so useful! The design, interface, and everything else is just perfect. Anyone who is considering getting one definitely should!

I thought about getting a Kindle, but as I'm not a fan of being an early adopter, I may just wait around to see if they come out with a second, improved version. Also, it's rather expensive for what it does, and the books aren't that cheap, either. I think I'll just be content with reading electronic books on my Pocket PCs for now, and maybe get a Kindle later, although I do like the general idea.

And the Kindle uses a proprietary format. Which means its files can only be read on the Kindle itself. Now, what other enterprising companies should do is develop a Kindle reader for other formats (such as Pocket PCs) that would allow people to purchase Kindle files for use on other devices. But of course, then people wouldn't buy the Kindle, cutting into Amazon's profits.

I know what you mean. It is inevitable that someone will come out with a universal format and much cheaper. We just couldn't wait cause we used a friends and fell in love.

I bought one for my husband about a month ago, to replace his paper subscription to the Wall Street Journal. We had a few problems with the paper version: sometimes it didn't get delivered, sometimes we got a different newspaper, when my husband travels he didn't get his paper, and he won't read an old newspaper. Additionally, it really filled up the recycle bin after a week.

The Kindle was a great solution. It's easy for him to read the paper on the train now, he is no longer fiddling with the large format of the newspaper. He gets his WSJ every day when he travels. It's $10 per month for the Kindle subscription, vs. the $249 (+tip) for the delivered paper.

I stick to going to the library for my books, but for my husband it is perfect. If the library ever starts lending out e-books, I will get one for me, too.

I want a Kindle and my mom promised me on for Christmas. We got one for my dad for his b-day last Jan and it took forever to get shipped, and then he had to finish all of the books he had stockpiled in the house. He's been using it for about 3 months now and really likes it. I was torn between this and the e-reader (I work for Sony). I like that Sony takes the pro-duo and SD cards, so I can save all of my books that way. But, the books are sometimes more expensive (for new releases) and they don't have a lot of the titles and authors that I like. The kindle seems to be cheaper, esp older books and has a lot of authors that I enjoy. Plus, it's slightly bigger. I can't wait to get it tho, esp since it dropped from 400 to $350!!

^^^its very light. its easy on the eyes. I like that you can preview books for free. the downloads are lightning quick. I like the fact that we are going to save alot of space now cause our house is overrun by books.
