I recently logged on to the bay and saw an auction about to end w/in minutes for my HG bag. I was soooooo excited that it was at a somewhat reasonable price and not over $600 like the other ones that have sold on the bay!!! I quickly read through the details, assuming everything about the bag was stated (b/c there were some small marks on it which were disclosed & I could live with) and placed my bid! AND I WON!!! I could hardly believe it!! Then after the shock wore off, I realized that it didn't mention anything about being from a smoke free environment...
Yep, I forgot to ask THE question! So just before I was about to pay, I sent the seller an email asking them if it comes from a smoke free environment. I honestly didn't think it was going to be an issue b/c why would they disclose small marks if they didn't want to disclose everything? Well I was wrong! They wrote me back saying it IS from a smoking home! I was soooo shocked and soooo disappointed. I think I sat there staring at the computer for what seemed like hours. I was mad at them for not disclosing it and mad at myself for not thinking of asking...even though I honestly know I wouldn't have had enough time to ask ANY question and have them respond back before the auction ended. But nonetheless, that's what happened. So back to the email, the seller did ask if I was still interested purchasing the bag and I replied back saying no, unfortunately. I know that I can get ding'ed for this but I'm willing to take that chance b/c I just absolutely cannot live with a bag that is from a smoking home. KWIM? My only other option is to purchase it and then try to turn around and sell this bag, disclosing the smoke but I REALLY don't want to do that! I'm hoping the seller will acknowledge that we both made a mistake...them not disclosing & me not asking. We'll see. What would you do if you were the seller & what would you do if you were in my shoes, too??? I'm officially bummed that this HG bag won't be mine after all. I was SOOOOOOO CLOSE to owning this bag!!! |

HI,
Sorry about the bag!!! I have only bought a wallet on Ebay!!! I bid on two of the same wallet! one auction ended that day and the other ended 3 days after the first one!!! It was the same seller and he was nice enough to withdraw my initial bid! (I did pay more, because I thought I would never see the wallet again!!) I don't know that much about Ebay, but I should hope the seller wouldn't give you a bad mark as he/she didn't disclose that the bag came from a smoking home!!! Can I ask what the bag was? Good Luck on finding a new one!!! Lynne

I would have done what you did and just not pay and get dinged. If I were the seller I would just offer it to the underbidder, it's not a big deal. Keep looking, you'll get your HG and learn from this mistake. I wish smokers would disclose that info up front.

I am so sorry to hear this. That would be a bummer. Some sellers don't realize that this is an important factor in a purchase so I don't think it was on purpose. Hopefully seller has a bidder just below you that it isn't a huge price difference and can do a second chance offer. In my own opinion, if the smoking thing is a huge factor, I think a buyer should ask before the auction ends. Maybe there is a happy medium that you both can take. Maybe you can agree to accept the bag to see if it even smells like smoke or not before deciding?
Good luck. |

^^Yeah, it's easy to offer it to the underbidder(s), the seller just clicks on second chance and sends them an ebay email. The seller won't have to go through that much trouble. Smokers need to say that they smoke, their bags are next to them all day while they smoke, of course it's going to smell like smoke. Don't accept it! If you do get dinged you can put a follow-up feedback under your ding feedback that says something like "item from undisclosed smoking home; refused, allergies" or something like that so it won't look so bad.

Don't feel so bad...it really should have been disclosed in the auction. I wouldn't want to spend $600 for my coveted HG bag and in the end have it reek of smoke either! Smokers sometimes forget that non-smokers can really smell the smoke.

i totally agree. it would be a nice gesture to offer something for the fees. smoke is a deal breaker for me on any bag. i try to ask every time, but once in a while i have forgotten too. it is something that really should be in the listing either way. also, with ebay, you may get a non paying bidder strike but i don't think buyers can get negative feedback any more. good luck. |

It should have been disclosed, but talk to some of the women on here who have purchased and got the smell out. ESPECIALLY with all leather bags!!! Just saying...I sell bags from a smoking home and another TpFer bought one, she was carrying it 3 days later (said you could only smell if right up to your face) and that the smell is almost TOTALLY gone 3 weeks later. I know alot of you are funny about it, but with leather there is a MUCH BETTER chance that it will go away in a decent period of time!!!

I think I'd paypal her $5 or $10 for fees.
2nd chance offer doesn't always work. She should have disclosed, you should have asked prior to bidding. |

No way would I accept a bag from a smoking environment. Ebay and bag buying scare the crap out of me. You just never know what you are really getting.

so sorry this happened but i would offer her maybe even $10-15 (go high the first time lol!) and maybe she will sell it to someone else, who cares if you get a negative just make the comment like the previous poster said. maybe if she says its a very faint smell, maybe if she doesn't actually smoke inside her house then you could get it out. i used to smoke cigarettes myself but only outside b/c it just ruins ur things! good luck =o(

She can file with ebay to get her fees back for a non paying bidder. She doesn't have to pay fees if you didn't pay her. I know it's bad to back out of a deal but it's better to do that than go through the whole rigamarole of getting it then sending it back again.
