Default Leather = "Timeless"

Well I've been reading on here how a LOT of you ladies like the leather because it's "timeless" and classy etc. And I agree to a Certain extent (but I just love the leather stuff now becuase I love it now - mostly) however, whenever I look on eBay in the vintage section and see all the leather bags, it's like you can just totally tell they are so dated...like the bags from the 80-90's where everything is just so plain, no details, no pockets, usually a simple flap and maybe a turnlock.

I had cheap no-name purses like this when I was in Junior High in the mid-90's and they look just like these vintage Coach purses. And to me they really aren't all that attractive today - especially compared to the so beautiful and luscious bags of today.

Sooo that being said, I really wonder how "timeless" you all REALLY think these bags are...don't you think that in 10-20+ years our lovely bags of today will be just as outdated looking as the afore mentioned vintage bags?

i think there are some styles that are also classic and timeless. that said, when u look at a bag that is 20 yrs old, come on, no matter how well it wears u know it is an older bag. these bags are meant to b used for the vintage classic feel and not to look current.

I think you should check out Shakti29's vintage leather Coach collection. She has choice pieces that are both unique and interesting--not plain or dull, IMO. I think the signature bags will be dated (and I don't know how well they will hold up over time). Some of the leather bags may be dated.

The thing about those old Coach bags was how well they were made. And some people prefer simple to lots of bells and whistles on their bags.

To each her own.

P.S. I own one of those vintage Coach bags that I bought when I moved to NYC in 1986. And I love that it says, "Made in New York City, U.S.A" on the creed.

Yeah, I totally get that...but that's kinda my point...they look dated, so therefore not timeless. If you can really tell that they are old and not of a current style, then I don't think that places them in the "timeless" category.

Vintage is the keyword here...

And I am sure someone will ask the same question about OUR bags... a bag will date to it's era on MANY factors... like silouhette, colors used, amount of hardware, style... etc...

No matter what, a bag will look it's era ESPECIALLY one as famous as Coach...

The only brand that really won't date is LV because they make the same stuff for 50+years before it's retired...

You bring up some good points, but I have to disagree. The bags of the 80's and 90's are understated and true classics. To me, they are icons of leather purses. These classic designs are even available to order on Coach's site. IMHO.

I'm not a big fan of the older or "vintage" Coach styles, but that's mainly because I prefer more hardwear or brighter colored leather. I do think those styles above are still classic and fairly sought-after, at least from what I've read. They're just not for me.

It's entirely possible that the bags I consider "timeless" today will look dated in 15-20 years' time, but I think that's a good lifespan for a bag. (And it's entirely possible that I'll love my bags and keep using them even if others consider them dated, lol!)

WOW! What a nice compliment! I had LOTS more vintage/classic bags that I sold just because I felt they weren't "stylish" enough for me. I kept the ones that I feel ARE timeless. Styles and trends come and go and you never know...some of those old bags MIGHT come back in style!

Every thing happens in a cycle, look at the new Bleeker's, Thompson, Legacy boutique exclusives all of which I think are a throw back to a different era. At least with the classic pieces you can see what the new versions were inspired by.

You are right, the "cheap no-name purses" might look like Coach bags, but they probably weren't made with the quality of leather and craftmanship that went into the vintage Coach bags. I have seen some AMAZING Coach bags that are over 30 years old without a missing stitch or tear in the leather.

And yes, I'm sure alot of bags we carry now will be out of style eventually. And unfortunately with the stories I'm reading about new Coach bags falling apart, they probably won't even be around and useable in 10-20 years.

ITA!

Part of the FABULOUS history of Coach are ALL the bags they have designed, starting in 1962 (see my Bonnie Cashin thread further down the page). As you can see, I am rather passionate about the vintage thing. And like I said, I wouldn't want every bag ever designed, in any era. I just appreciate the history and quality of those older bags.

I wasn't aware that some of today's looks are based on those of yester-year. I haven't been into Coach for very long at all, so all I can go off of are the things I see on eBay for sale at the moment.

If I found some bags that looked anything like those that are being made today I Would be all over them, but I haven't come across any yet.
