Lordguinny - I love your idea!

The other thing that I do is when I store the bag I wrap the lock in soft cloth separately so that the moving around won't chip other portions of it too.

Thanks B! I actually think it looks better too. When I take the leather piece off the square brass looks almost too bare. I learned this trick from Roey.

That's one of the issues with the Bowler style. You can put the leather piece over the plate but unlike the satchel, it completely changes the shape of the bag. The lock hangs lopsided and the whole bag looks distorted. I had to be so careful with the Bowler when I had it because the leather piece could not be used for protection.

With my remaining three Paddys (tan, whiskey and noir), all of the locks have issues but you have to look closely to see them and they don't detract from the overall look of the bag at all.

Default Do brand new paddys ever come with a scuffed lock?

Another attempt at a whiskey paddy arrived from NM.com today. It was ordered last week pre-muscade, pre-gris, pre-CRAZINESS! Well.....she is GORGEOUS! Very squishy, very soft, very pebbly, truly beautiful. Perhaps the muscade will arrive tomorrow and blow me away, but for now I am really bonding with the whiskey. Once again there were no tags on it or in it. Only the Chloe care booklet. I can live with this, but do brand new ones ever come with a peeled/scuffed lock??? The hasp shows a little spot where you can see the silver color under the brassy coating. I know it happens over time, but do they get damaged like this in transit or in stores? Also, there is a little fading of color/unnatural lightness right on the "C" of the little leather band that wraps around the lock. Is this a big deal? It is like a little bleached spot on the leather.

Tomorrow I wil attempt to capture these two issues with a photo and post them. But for now I'd love your thoughts. If I send it back, it is probably my last shot with whiskey. I am tired of NM.com and don't know any particular stores with a whiskey in stock! Thanks everyone.

I didn't mean to love this one......

HI Triplets,
Congrats on your new baby!
Hmm...I dunno about peeled lock, but my Chloe (mousse/dove color, 2006, hardwares all in silver) does have the scuffed look.
I think it's supposed to be that way since in Vogue magazine it says that the scuffed look on the silver hardwares on the Chloe is part of the charm. If the peeled look bothers you that much maybe taking a picture and take it to NM would be a great idea!
Cheers,
Cielo

Distressed locks are inevitable. No matter how careful I was with my chocolate paddington it has spots where the matted brass has worn off near the loop (but not exactly peeling off). It isn't noticable, but since I am such a nit-picker I notice it. Believe me, a regular person would not notice. My whiskey padlock has yet to show any signs of wear but this is because it is still brand new. I know some PF members whose bag came out of the box with peeled/distressed locks. It can happen from SA's handling it on the showroom or from packing/shipping. Don't worry about the tags. Most bags you buy from NM.com don't come with a serial/bar code tag attached to the bag. They come with a dustbag, Chloe care cards and the shipping/return form.

Paddingtons are suppose to be vintage chic. Distressed locks add to the charm just as much as the squishy leather. Ever notice how the leather looks best smooshy, pebbled and wrinkled? I won't mind when my locks start to peel...I think it will be charming. I also wouldn't mind about the faded "C" either. The only thing that concerns me is the leather. If I land a paddington with the perfect leather a little thread here or fading here doesn't bother me.

But my ending advice for any new paddy owner, if you are going feel like your bag is somewhat inadequate then return it. $1600 is a lot to pay for a bag that isn't perfect for you!

BTW, here's a tip that most paddington owners do to protect their locks. Unzip your paddington, take one of the leather square pieces and pull it towards the large Chloe brass plate. Slide the square opening over the jutting loop. Lock the padlock over it. Your bag will be unzipped but this never bothers me. You can just close the bag by pulling the padlock over it! The leather piece will soften the bounce of the padlock on your brass nameplate, therefore slowing the chipping process. I've attached a photo for you to see.

I will post pics tomorrow. lordguinny is right, it is not peeling, it s worn-off. I really want to show you all the bleach in the leather. This would be an extreme exaggeration, but in trying to describe.....it would be like someone used nail polish remover and rubbed it and it pulled some of the color from the bag. It is about the size of an eraser on the end of a pencil. OMG I have dried on milk from a sippy cup matted into the leather seat of my brand new car, but oh no, I don't worry about that! Instead I am OCD'ing over a quarter inch of purse leather.

I too bought a whiskey from NM/BG (a few months back) and for $1540 I was very disappointed: the bottom edgework was already fading and show signs of wear, like it had been used and returned

In the end I wanted it to be perfect so back it went.

My mousse's lock came looking scuffed, but my choco lock was pristine. Funny thing was, I am now certain my choco was a return too!! In the depths of one outter pocket I found a small barrett I was already bonded with it by then so I keep it! Hee!

Good luck and am dying to see pics of the rest of your loot!!

You are funny. Buying purses that "pop" up on NM.com is tricky. What I mean by "popping" up is that they aren't offered on a regular bases. The bag pops up when it becomes available, and often times it is because it was a return. At this point I guess you have to think about whether or not you want to keep it because you love the leather and color. As the year goes on whiskey will be harder and harder to find. Most department stores do not have it in stock....if they do they are Spring '06 paddingtons. I believe Chloe is trying to push the muscade/orange.

I personally adore my whiskey color. It is very rich and "pops". I would be very interested in seeing your whiskey photos. This way we can either alieve your worries or tell you to send that baby back. Qouting my SA, "They aren't giving you these bags for free!"

I'd also be VERY interested in seeing muscade and whiskey side by side.

I think that is normal because at the chloe store in Ny, they had some scuffed locks as well. One bag which was very soft and pebbled, had some scratching on the gold plate and some wear on the lock. I'm not too sure about the hue change, I would need to see it.

Edit: I think what everyone said here is right. The scuffing on the lock and the smushing of the leather is part of the vintage look chloe is trying to achive. But I understand how you feel, if you pay so much for a bag then it should be perfect. Sleep on it and wait for your other chloe before making any choices!

There was no scuffing what so ever on my bag when i got it but now that's i've had it for a while, there is a little bit of a scuff where the lock loops onto the ring. It's definitely not peeling though...

My charcoal paddy's lock came pristine from Chloe in NY - since it came about a month ago, I've been using it daily - and I did put one of the leather square pieces over the plate under the lock - thanks, lordguinny! I checked my lock yesterday (switched to my MJ Blake - going to the beach for the weekend and I don't want Paddy to go...but I'll miss her!) and I noticed that the top part of the lock that goes through the loop looks a bit worn, as well as another part of it. It's like the dull brushed coating wore (or chipped) off, revealing the shinier brass underneath. I'm not obsessing about it - I agree that it's part of the charm - but I do wonder why Chloe can't make a lock with a finish that won't chip off - especially on a $1540 bag! Kind of makes me want another one with silver hardware that much more...

Oh yes, I do understand how you feel Bisbee That's why when I bought my very first Chloe I opted for the Mousse Paddy 2006 (the one with the silver hardwares) so it will look dull on the silver overtime from usage, but not peeling or dull coating since the silver doesn't have any coating on top of it, unlike the brass ones.
Maybe you should buy another one in silver hardwares hee...hee
Think of it as faith!

I'm super anal when I purchase that I demand one be brought out from the back, hehe. When I bought my large front pocket paddy from the Chloe boutique in Costa Mesa, the one from the back had scratch marks on the lock and plate already. I asked for another one which was in pristine condition and purchased that one. The scratches are definitely from handling by the SA's or during shipment. I wouldn't worry too much if you were lucky enough to get the whiskey paddy. They are pretty rare now. But I do know how you feel... It will eventually get scuffed up, but it just feels better knowing it was ME who did it
