Echo Daisy. My Bowler arrived perfect, and now it has the slightest peeling on the back of the loop. I freaked, then had to get over it. It mostly happens when you flip the lock and back and forth to get in and out of the bag.

Jacquelinez, in response to your question, I have a friend that has a Paddy, and every time she uses it, she'll hook her lock in one of those metal loops at the end of the handle (you know where the key is tied). She says that way she can get in and out of the bag easily and won't have to worry about the lock scratching.

Or we could just say that the lock is *supposed* to chip to give it that Chloe vintage look!

I hook the lock onto the leather tab too but that only protects part of the lock.. they still get pretty banged up. =|

Mine is pretty banged up. I got used to it and now I actually think that it's part of the charm of this handbag. The leather only slouches more with use, the lock chips and the whole handbag looks vintage!

Or you can go with the mousse or anthracite colors with the silver hardware...I don't think they have lock chipping issues.

No as the metal comes pretty battered au naturel.

Oops, I misread the first time. I don't do that. =)

ET - It's actually the opposite. The older original locks were a matte finish gold, very heavy and solid underneath - even though these still scratch, they don't look as bad because it doesn't expose silver metal underneath a shiny gold finish like the newer ones do.

The first season's bags had the best locks and the next 2 seasons weren't that bad either. They really only started to become a problem when they "tried" to make them lighter (probably to cut costs - they're not lighter enough to make a difference to the weight of the bag) and made them using a different process that just coats a shiny silver metal surface with gold something. When the new ones scratch, you just notice it more.

But regardless, there is very little you can do to stop the scratching - metal against metal is just going to do that.

Default HAVE YOU: Experienced Lock Chips or Chipping or Scratches?

I love my tan paddy that i recently got but I started to notice that the inside of the loop of the lock is starting to get stratched up and I'm afraid it will lead to chipping of the brush coat. I was wondering if theres anything we can do about it or is it just a part of an aging bag? Thanks for your help.

To the best of my knowledge, there is really not much you can do. It comes with the territory and in my opinion, it adds character to the bag. I think it goes well with the general slouchiness of the bag and the distressed effect...

When mine started discolouring on the inside of the padlock loop i basically resorted to using the two little leather straps before putting the padlock on. When those 2 rectangular leather straps are in place they actually stop the padlock from moving around too much so the paint doesn't chip as much. Only problem is that it takes me ages and a lot of fumbling around to open and close the bag again.

There is really nothing you can do. Just think of it as adding "character" to the bag. I'm just really careful about flipping the lock harshly. As That Chloe is Mine mentioned, most PF'ers will attach the leather strip to the padlock hole so the square Chloe brass isn't rubbing up against the padlock. I've attached a photo so you can see what I mean.

Btw, That Chloe is Mine, there is a way to ease your opening/closing problem. Make sure that your zippers aren't zipped when you protect the padlock. Unzip them and then slide the indvidual piece over.

Why don't you try cutting a PDA smallscreen protector (preferrably with very low adhesive) to the size of the brass plate and attach it to the plate to protect both the plate and the lock from scratching each others? Most high quality PDA protector are clear and highly scratch resistance.
