Once we started wedding planning, we figured that our expenses were piling up even though our parents are paying for the wedding itself. To not burden our parents with EVERYTHING, we ended up paying for my dress and DF's suit and we will also be paying for our wedding bands and the honeymoon. Since we really want a luxurious honeymoon, the costs are really adding up, so DF and I agreed we would go really easy on the Christmas presents this year. My birthday is also in December and I told DF that since he was so generous in buying my wedding dress, he should forgo a birthday gift for me this year. He asked if I was sure (since I usually have one specific thing I want every year) and I told him that I really wanted to put the money towards our honeymoon. He said okay and that was that.

Rewind back to my birthday last year. DF wanted to get me a nice watch. I loved the Chanel J12 and he loved a Rolex lady datejust. He HATED the J12. He ended up getting me the Rolex, which I love to pieces and wear every day. The problem is that the Rolex is really a bit blingy for my every day wear and it takes a ton of abuse. I commented recently that I wanted to get a more "durable" watch since I felt bad about scratching up my nice watch.

Fast forward to yesterday. DF always leaves pretty early for work and I stick around to tend to the dogs before I leave for work. It was about 9AM and there was a knock at the door. It's a FedEx Express guy with a package addressed to me. I wasn't expecting anything, especially from FedEx Express so I open the package, wondering what is was. In it is a white J12 with diamond markers and a note from DF saying "Happy early birthday, Boba!" (his nickname for me). I DIED! It was exactly what I wanted for every day wear but didn't have the funds for! He did such a good job surprising me - I didn't expect a birthday gift AT ALL. He also planned it well that the Express delivery always happens before I leave for work. I asked him about the honeymoon and he told me not to worry - it will be amazing! I am SO EXCITED! I need to go to NM to have all the extra links taken out because it is way too big for me.

Sorry for the long story, I just had to share! He doesn't usually surprise me because I really hate surprises but this one was just amazing!

OMG That is too sweet!!! What an awesome gift too!

Here's a pic of me and DF cutting the cake. My dad took TONS of photos there so I actually have quite a few without even having the professional ones!!

And no problem, needloub. It's easy to get caught up in those little stresses, so just keep the big picture in mind. Do what you want to do, but do it carefully and in a way that won't hurt any feelings. Be a team with your DF whenever possible. And remember that some stuff, it's okay to bend and give in (we did with our guest list and we were glad we did in the end! we had quite the bash!). Good luck sweetie... remember you can come here to vent about that kind of thing.
Thanks!! It felt good to vent a little...or a lot...LOL!

Congrats!!!! Enjoy your new journey!!! I got engaged on New Year's Eve 2006 and got married on November 17, 2007. It was a pretty big wedding considering we both have big families!! We had about 350 guests!! For our honeymoon we did the 7 day Cruise in Hawaii!! On Dec. 16, my birthday, we found out we are expecting!! Yes honeymoon baby! Made in Hawaii!! All I can say is when you least expect it things just gets better. Have fun and many blessings!! CONGRATS!!!!!

Maybe I watch too much tv but I expected DF's family to help out more...specifically his mother. Can I get an idea, an opinion? Nothing....the only time I hear something from them, it's always about beef between DF's mother and stepmother.

Sorry for the vent ladies, but I expected the mother of the groom to help with something. Only his stepmother wanted to help and be a part of the ideas, so I emailed her several things. When I emailed DF's mother, all she says is "this is nice." I don't know if the money aspect has her put off, but her lack of anything has put me off. My DF always gives a lame excuse such as "she raised a boy." She is a woman...what woman doesn't have an opinion or an idea on a wedding, especially when it has to do with her only child? Sorry for the rant....like my father said, focus on the people who are excited and genuinely happy for you.
My DF's family has been completely uninvolved! I've been trying to keep them up-to-date by writing newsy letters with pics of our venue (my MIL-to be doesn't much care for talking on the phone). I've never received a response, although I think she likes the letters... she told my DF she thought it was nice. But isn't it weird to get no communication back?!

They are supposed to pay for our rehearsal dinner, but have done no research on where it should be... so I did a bunch, and recommended a number of venues. Their response, when I presented these options, can basically be summed up as a big, "whatever." WTF? My DF is their first child to marry, and not to brag, but I am kind of a catch. A little excitement, please!

HeartMyMJs-- We are considering Hawaii for our honeymoon, too! Neither of us have been... anyone have suggestions on resorts and which islands to see? We will probably not do a cruise, because we just took one in May and would like to try something else.
