Default Teacher Vent Thread - *SUPPORT ONLY!*
Only venting and getting support in here! No fussing at each other!!!!

Okay, then, so we must all feel the need for this. I'll start because I have a good one today!

Today one of my 2nd grade boys got irritated with another boy. He slapped him across the face and then punched him in the stomach. I e-mailed the parents to let them know that a conduct notice was coming home and why. The response I received? "Thanks for letting me know. I'll ask my son what happened when he gets home."

Speechless.

"I'll ask my son what happened?" I JUST TOLD YOU WHAT HAPPENED. As if I didn't get all of the information myself and base my discipline on both sides of the story? GEEZ!

Oh boy. And so it begins! Is this the 1st or 2nd week for you? Our students just started yesterday, and so far so good. I teach high school, but my mom teaches 2nd grade and I can't believe how misbehaved kids can be at that young of an age. The parents seem to think it's "never their child" too :( What I am doing so far this year which it making each day wonderful is when I get upset or frustrated about an incident with a student, I remember something good or the students who are eager to learn and are happy in class. It makes the day so much better

Creative discipline or redirecting always worked best for me. I was a high school teacher though so you can treat kids differently. For example, when 2 girls would talk in the middle of my lecture I would stop and say "Emerald, I don't know why you are talking with Jessica. She was totally talking about you when she came into class." The girls knew I was joking but it got my point across for them to stop talking. They stopped and I was able to continue teaching. Sometimes I just felt like telling students to stop talking and be quite got so old. There was another time I wrote up one of my students for writing on my air conditioning unit Purdy (my name) = Hitler. I didn't yell at him in class or go out in the hall to have a conference. I simply just gave him the slip. He later came to me and said why did you write me up? I thought you were cool. I simply told him Hitler seemed so easy to say. He should have come up with something more creative. Needless to say, he didn't mess with my room anymore and there wasn't any anomosity between us.

Tired. Mentally and physically tired.

I'm making brownies. It's been that kind of day. (I wasn't kidding when I told a co-worker I was going to go home and stuff something chocolately in my mouth!)

My 4th period class makes me want to rip my hair out

And, my sleep schedule is BEYOND messed up - I get home around 5-6 pm and fall asleep until 10 or 11 and then I'm up until 2 or 3 and go back to bed and then get up at 5 am; ugh! I can't seem to get turned around NOR can I stay awake when I get home from work; I'm just TOO exhausted to do anything (I check email/tpf/etc and then zonk right out!) until I've had a good few hours of sleep and then I can get back up and eat dinner and lesson plan and stuff. Bleh =\

I love this. I don't like to dwell on the negative, either! When people start getting to be too negative all the time, it's a real downer. It's better to take more positive steps like this in dealing with things. Good for you! I'm willing to bet you are one of those teachers that the kids love and really respect. :)

I'm not a teacher but I just have to say, I have much respect for what you do.

Keep up the good work!

Ok, first year teacher here and I think I am going to frequent this thread!

Let me say, I've had a good year so far. I even had a good day today until...I went looking for these assessments I had done on some students about three weeks ago (they are beginning a new curriculum and these assessments show me where to start them within the curriculum). Well, I couldn't find the assessments anywhere! They are totally gone...somehow in the shuffle of all the paperwork I've been having to do I lost them.

It's not the end of the world. I can certainly assess them again, and it really won't even take that long (it's only 10 students, and they're quick assessments), I don't want to be known as "that teacher who loses important things." Not to mention, I will be thinking about it all weekend.

Any seasoned teachers have any similar stories to share? It will make me feel better to know that I'm not alone in my disorganization.

^To be honest, I am hyper-obsessively-weirdo sort of organized. My co-workers laugh (good-naturedly) at me. HOWEVER, I can sympathize with the irritation. You won't be known as "the teacher who loses important things." You already have a solution, even if you can't put it into action right now. You'll be known as the pro-active teacher who solves problems!
