I'm sorry about your day! I can't imagine 1st graders being able to do it....
At the middle school level where I am I feel bad for the SPED and ELL students - I can't believe they are expected to answer questions created by people who have no clue...

Good grief. First grade is way too young for standardized testing. Look what this country has come to. It's pathetic.

My vent for the day: Why is it that the only parents we hear from are the gripers and complainers for whom nothing will be good enough? I've been teaching for 12 years and I know I'm good at what I do, but the constant state of being everyone's punching bag is getting to me. I feel inadequate some days, irrational as it is, because I can't get through any period of time without hearing that someone is complaining about something I've done. The latest one: A parent wants the tests graded and sent home the same day they're given. I mean, how do you make that person happy?!?!
It's wearing me down. It gets hard to keep focusing on the reason I'm there when I constantly feel like no matter what I do, people are going to be griping and bad-mouthing me at the ballpark. Sigh. I just feel inadequate.

Fabae - I wish I could post the email exchange we have going with a parent over a "90" on a homework assignment. This parent wants to actually have a meeting - over a "90"!

Thank the stars that it is almost Friday - I have earned it this week!

^ Oh, yeah. I actually get that on a not-infrequent basis. Can you believe that? Talk about a spectacular way to set your child up for disappointment when he/she realizes that (1) he/she is NOT, in fact, perfect and (2) Mommy will not always be able to fix every little problem [including those that aren't problems in the real world.]

I actually have an honor student being evaulated for learning disabilities. I have seen NO problem, her teacher last year saw NO problem, she was on the honor roll all 4 quarters last year - without struggling, I might add - and will be for the first quarter this year. The problem? In the first 3 weeks of school, when students are still transitioning into the new grade and getting used to a higher level of work and a new teacher, she made several Bs and a couple of Cs.

........

I don't even know what to say about that.

I want to shake the mother senseless. "What sort of perfection are you looking for?!?!?! Are you TRYING to ruin your child?!?!" God help her.

My vent: I just got scheduled in to teach visual arts for Grade 6 classes - it would've been nice if I was informed of this by administration but nope it was by a fellow teacher and by accident. I guess I was suppose to show up next week and be surprised with having no lesson ready for class.

My bright spot of the day: Three firefighters came today to show the primary students fire safety and have the kids walk through the firetruck. I had some great eye candy for an hour and a half in the morning...lol...They even put on their uniforms - very hot (I love a guy in uniform!). Unfortunately there are no good looking male teachers around the school so no eye candy on a daily basis.

Ha ha! We had the firemen at our school last year. It's a good way to spend the morning.

Was it a full moon this week? Even my kids who are usually super quiet were wacko this week!

Yummy! Love me some Firemen. I miss that about teaching Kindergarten.

One year we had these 'boosterthon" guys come around all week collecting money for whatever fundraiser it was and GOOD GOD.... it must have been mandatory for them to be hot! Even when I knew I didn't have $$ that day to give I would tell a kid, "Go to my desk and get the boosterthon envelope." Of course there's nothing there, just wanted a moment of chit chat.
"What do mean there's no envelope? Keep looking hun!"

One time I was at the movies, and didn't recognize our school resource officer - because he was in clothes! It is sooooo about the uniform!

Every once and awhile we get a really hot dad...which works for me as long as they don't drive a minivan!

Where I teach, we have some kids whose dads are NHL players, so it's nice when they come into the school to do some fundraising and things. We also get some varsity basketball players who come in too (one of the parent's husband is a coach), so whenever these athletes come in, the other kids would be in an autographing frenzy. Last year, one of the basketball players came in to read to my grade 1 students and when he finished reading, my students told him he was a horrible reader who didn't show them any of the pictures in the book!!!! lol You should've seen the shock on this basketball player's face - he didn't know what to say!

There truly is an art to reading a children's book. It's kinda funny when someone comes to read to the kids and they stink at it. Even our Media specialist needs some work when reading- snooze fest.

I love reading Junie B. Jones and use different voices and one of my moms wrote me such a nice note. (she was there when I was reading to them one day) She said she's now a fan of Junie because of me. I love notes like that!

Our principal is an awesome book reader. He reads in funny accents and makes faces - goes all out. It's a riot and the kids are rapt.

This is what I totally hate about teaching - it's the pettiness amongst some of the teachers. So I needed this drama resource book from a fellow teacher who by the way is not planning on using it at all this year. I asked her if I could borrow it and photocopy all the pages I need because this resource book is sold out. She told me I can have one morning to photocopy it and it has to be on Wednesday in which I can't because I have yard duties and no prep time. What the f**k is up with that stipulation? I told her then I guess I won't be borrowing it and she told me that it's my loss....

wtf!
Is there a copy mom or another teacher who could copy it for you? I would help out another teacher if asked. Maybe even more so if I heard the story!

Wow, that's rude. Weird stipulations to begin with, and then "It's your loss"? Urg. I'm lucky enough now to work with people who really take care of each other. We're like a little family. Makes every day a little nicer.
