^^the leather on the Commemorative REISSUES is distressed calf-skin. They have made later "Reissues" (2006/2007) in other distressed leathers as well - patent, etc.

Look out Singapore!!
So what is the timeless classic?? NM short hills told me those were the only bags that were going up in price and the SA had none to show me but said it was NOT the same bag as the classic flap...

uggghh!! Then I went to Chanel at Short Hills and good lord, the SA there confused me even more - he said reissues DID NOT have the mademoiselle closure (????) and the classic flap was never refered to as a 2.55 and he too could not show me a copy of a 2.55 - HELP???? Oh and the SA also said something about one of them having a BURGUNDY lining???

I also have a ?. Are the commemorative reissues no longer around for the most part? I believe I have one that I purchased on ebay from another TPF member. I will hold onto if hard to find.

Here goes:

In February 1955 Coco Chanel introduced a handbag - double flap, with mademoiselle (square) closure and mademoiselle metal chain. It became popularly known as the 2.55.

Over the years there have been many variations to the original design of the 2.55 including the leather/fabric, the chain - metal vs. interwoven leather, single flap vs. double flap, and the closure - mademoiselle vs. interlocking CC.

The 2.55 refers to ALL FLAP STYLE BAGS including variations of the original.

The term CLASSIC FLAP commonly refers to the flap with the interlocking CC closure and the leather interwoven chain.

In February 2005 Karl Lagerfeld re-made the 2.55 - exactly as Coco Chanel had made in 1955 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 2.55. It came to be known as the REISSUE. Technically the term REISSUE should only be used for the bags that were made to commemorate the original - so only those in 2005. However, it has become convenient to call all 2.55s that resemble the original 2.55 REISSUEs and all 2.55s that have the interlocking CCs CLASSIC FLAPS.
This definately helps. One more question, the reissue that was remade was only in one size, right?

Just one more question re. the commemorative bag... are these very hard to find and what would you say the value is?

Well they cannot be found in stores anymore. You can search eBay completed auctions to try to get some idea about secondary market value.

ALL THE BAGS!
Great post, but you may want to edit to correct the prices! There have been two increases since the ones you've listed there.

Also, you forgot to mention that the 2.55 is the BEST PURSE EVER MADE. So says me

Thanks Nathalie. Very informative blog.

The prices listed are the prices for the commemorative reissues in 2005. Also, some of the reissues released in early 2006. The later 2006 reissues increased in price, and prices have also increased in 2007.

I am exhausted with all this 2.55 CC talk. Not so keen on this particular bag,but would love to have the large Chanel black croco bag, that was shown in ads about a year ago. The only reason I don´t have it is the price- it is sooo expensive. But a woman can dream, can´t she?

After reading all the post in the thread,
i just have some questions
Was the reissue the original design ?
The reissue is just an "improved" version of the classic?
Was the classic the first to be launched?

Thanks :)
