Made in France vs. Made in Italy

I have 2 Chanel bags right now. 1 has a made in France label and the other has a made in Italy. Does anyone know why or what the difference is?

Ha, Sherry, I'm laughing at my keyboard right now!! I wanted to post the same question. You know it bothers me that Chanel is French and some of the bags have a Made in Italy label/plate!

Most people don't care I have come to find out.

And for anyone that does care (

) I ordered a new brown Outdoor Tote from NM in White Plains today due to some minor nuances I found on my current one, including the Made in Italy plate. Sherry's red tote says Italy too.

But off-topic for just a sec - a big thanks to elongreach (Erica). I asked the s/a if she would send the bag as a gift to myself to waive sales tax, and she said that would be fine as long as I gave her another address for the sale! I used my work address, but she still shipped to my home address.

So now I can compare my two totes, and return the one I paid 5% sales tax on!

Roey - you are the one who gave me the idea for this post!! I thought I was the only moron in the world who didn't know why a Chanel bag would have a "Made in Italy" plate. The ones I've seen (including my wallet) say "Made in France". What's up with that? I think my sunnies are "Italy" though. I'm going to do a quick inventory check and will get back to this post!

Well I believe from what I've seem - All the timeless classic pieces (in caviar or lambskin) tend to be made in France. All the seasonal lines may be made in Italy (like the Cambon line was all Italy expect for the reporter bag I THINK, same for many temporary lines)... So like many designers they make the hardest to make, requires extra care and attention in France and ship the easier to assemble bags elsewhere (in Chanel's case it would be Italy)

Hi Yorelica, I thought the same way but then my grand shopping tote caviar was made in italy. So, I guess may be there are some other reasons.

Hmm actually the grand shopper is a easy to make bag (at least IMO)
So that could justify our belief still... lol
You know if you compare the shopper to a double flap....the craftsmanship is very different...

Italy is actually the most expensive place for a designer to have things made . Their millinery , clothier , artisan , type professionals are the highest paid of any in the world . They are closely followed by France .

I read a long article in The Wall Street Journal on this subject awhile ago . Not Chanel , but luxury designer labels in general ( Chanel was mentioned though )n .

Yeah, I know. Double flap is very hard to make. I believe they were all made in france. But If you have time come to South Coast Plaza, take a look at the latest single flap bags currently display in store, you wouldn't believe these bags were made in france. The alignment is terrible. I saw several bags in South Coast Plaza have serious alignment problem. If I buy these bags and later sell them on eBay, I am sure people think I sell fake bags. I should look at the tag to see if these bags were really made in france. Well... at my next visit.

Oh I do recall that...but for brands that don't originate in Italy I dont know...I still think the place of origin would cost more... but of course all those thoughts are in my head and no where else :) nothing to backup my wild beliefs

My Mademoiselle clutch says made in France. Maybe the quilting on the flap and mademoiselle are done in France. My Diamond Stitch is made in Italy. It could be more cost effective to produce in Italy since there are more factories and artisans?

I don't think you can lump them into specific bags being made in a specific country. I honestly feel it is more random than anything else. We are all just speculating here, nothing more.
