Hi thank you for answering. I looked at the link. It was very interesting. The problem is it was for a model , i suppose it wasnt meant for sale so im not sure if the tagg should be on there or not. The store is not very close to where i live so i havent had the chance to take a closer look. Thr dress is truly beautiful but of course i would rather it be authentic. I live in France but the shop is an a very isolated place so i cant really have it examined by an "expert". What should i do?
An alternative would be to take a lot of very detailed photos of the dress (including interior seems, etc.) and email them to a professional for help in authenticating it. However, it is always better to have it examined in person so the person looking at it can feel it and notice small details that you might not. If you live in France you could call the Rue Cambon flagship store and ask for advice on where to take the dress or where to send photos. I'm sure that someone (you may need to talk to multiple people) would try to help you. It has been my experience that when I take in very old vintage pieces of Chanel jewelry to the boutique, the sales associates are extremely excited and interested to see them. They like to see historical pieces.
Another way that you could do some research on your own would be to search vintage 1930's fashion magazines for photos of Chanel pieces and see if your dress matches any of the photos or looks as if it would be part of a certain collection. Your local library would probably have archives of French Vogue and other fashion mags from that time period. If not, they can order them from another branch. You can search books and online resources to see which issues contain spreads of Chanel clothing. Your library might have a subscription to the Vogue archives. It costs about $1500/year (in the US) and provides access to every issue of Vogue every printed.
I'm sure it seems like a daunting task, but it is a very exciting research project. Would you be comfortable posting some photos for us? Maybe someone here has seen the dress or something similar in a magazine? Keep us posted on what you find out!
