Ok- while i adore Chanel and own several Chanel bags and shoes- being Jewish, I struggled with whether I should buy them for a while when I learned that Coco Chanel was antisemetic and dated a nazi officer during world war 2. I decided it was okay since Karl Lagerfeld is the current designer and the company is actually 100% owned by a wealthy Jewish family- so I know none of the profits support antisemetic causes or people. And as much as I love Coco Chanels fashions, I cant see myself buying a book that talks about how great she was as a person.

^^^ yes, Coco was a collaborator during the vichy regime in France... it's a shameful period in french history where many prominent french citizens collaborated with the Nazis... but it was, quite often, a means of survival. Many of the same people who openly collaborated where also members of Le Resistance.

As for Coco, I don't know enough about her to say weather she fit into the latter catagory, or was an antisemite through and through.

Coco is a great role model for the modern girl! And definitely WAY aheadd of her time. She knows her own style and that's what everyone loved about her!

One can and does admire her work, but she's no role model as a human being. There were plenty of glamorous, talented women who didn't spend the war shacked up with a Nazi officer.

This is a super cute book. I ordered it for my little neice after seeing it featured on JuliB )http://www.julib.com/london/augustpi...7LO_email.html), and then of course ended up reading it myself before giving it to her.

Maxter, this is adorable! Thank you for posting it. I am teaching a course next semester on the History of Fashion, and while this book will not work as a reader for course, it is so cute I will have to use it as an example when I get to the lecture on Chanel.
