So much talent here! I used to do a lot of different things--crafts, crewel, needlepoint, bowling, bridge, all the mother volunteer things. Arthritis in my hands has cut my needlework back. I manage to do some cross stitch now and then.

doreenjoy, I'm an avid romance reader (along with all other kinds of books). If you'd rather not give your pen name online, PM me. The historicals are so interesting--I feel like I've learned quite a bit from them.

I must be the most UNTALENTED person here! Can't sew, needlepoint or any of the things mentioned. My Mom can do all those things and she tried to teach me, but being a leftie was so difficult. I can cook a little and my new hobby is my Christmas present from my DH. I will be working hard at puppy training! lol

Doreenjoy - I, too love to read, especially the historical romance novels and political thrillers. You must give us a hint! I am truly impressed by all of you ladies.

No, not Philippa Gregory, LOL. The first name of my pen name is Doreen, but that's probably the biggest hint I'm comfortable giving on tPF. Only a few of my books are in print these days...I'm between publishers right now.

jane, I'm so sorry about the weather. I think a lot of people's holidays plans have been turned upside down. I just hope that everyone is warm and safe wherever they are.

doreenjoy, I've considered writing myself and thought that 2009 might be the year to start. When I recount the trials of raising a child with special needs along with the frustrations of this old Victorian home, I may have tears in my eyes but my friends are laughing hysterically. I'd like to try to capture that real life humor on paper. Maybe if I read my own words I too will laugh!

kroquet, I have too many frogs!

doreenjoy, it's fascinating that you're a writer. I too like historical romance (and Phillipa Gregory is one of my favorites).

Since many of us like historical romance, have any of you read the Outlander series? I enjoyed those books very much.

I wish I could knit well. Like boxermom, my hands bother me from time to time, but that's not the main reason I don't knit. I just don't seem to have the talent for it. I've made a few scarves but they were pretty pathetic.

My big needlework love for many years was English smocking. We lived in the south when our three older children were young. I taught myself how to smock, and in the process of making the garments from the smocked pieces, I was forced to improve my rudimentary sewing skills. I made many, many daygowns, rompers, dresses, etc. for my children and for gifts. When we moved back home (Midwest), no one even knew what English smocking was. I taught a few classes in it but it didn't really catch on here. Now that I have a grandson, I'd love to take it up again but probably won't. Two reasons: My eyesight isn't what it used to be and the work is pretty meticulous, and the baby's father doesn't like anything on him that I consider "cute" and "baby". This baby actually has a Metallica t-shirt, and several Mario and other outfits with video game motifs. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to baby clothing, but I don't think that's going to happen with this baby.

LLAneedle, If you take up writing, I'd love to read what you write. I too have a child with special needs and I might be able to identify with the trials you have experienced. Our house is newer but it might as well be Victorian, with all its gigantic leaky double-hung windows and creaky scratched-up wood floors (thanks to the dogs!)

I've been working on a novel for almost 3 years (!). Man I need to get my ass in gear. Writing is really really hard.

Here is my Christmas present - Jack, a 5 month old Brussels Griffon. He is so sweet and loves to cuddle and looks just like an old man!

kroquet - he is pretty cute. I hear they are very clowny dogs. Looking forward to some silly Jack stories!

I forgot to mention my hobbies, sewing, following fashion for work and play, reading, playing with dogs, taking day trips around Nor. Cal. I have been making ""Chanel" type jackets for fun and learning for the last year.

I'm sure the right dog is out there waiting for you NWpurselover- sadly there are always so many dogs needing to be rescued... part of the reason we now have FOUR!!

As for the weather - I have lived here in Vancouver all my life (except for two years when I lived in Ottawa/Toronto) and I've never seen snow like this! Usually our snowstorms turn to rain before they even end and we just get a slushy mess (and I can remember so many times sitting at school watching it snow and knowing by the time we got out of school it would be raining and all the snow would be wet and gross). But this one just goes on and on - and there is more snow forecast for tonight/tomorrow. Crazy!!
