I think this is my first post here on the "chat thread," hope I'm welcome. I certainly feel like you're already friends of mine, given all the conversation I've had with several of you already about BV... most notably, what to buy? (If only you could all now tell me how to PAY for what I've bought!)
STUPIDFATASSLEWIS is indeed a funny name, not sure I'd want to buy from him either, but I'm intrigued enough to look up the auction, just for interest's sake. As for sleepaway camp, I can SO relate, although in truth, this is the first summer in like 19 years that none of my 3 kids are going to any camp at all. My oldest is 22 and working part-time while finishing college. My 18 yo DS and almost-16 yo DD are both working part-time as cashiers at a supermarket. Over the past 19 years, I've had 1, 2, or all 3 kids in daycamp, at sleepaway camp as campers or counselors. Partly, its because the camp where they spent most of their time was closed this year, just prior to its 100th summer. Very sad, but that's another story. In related news, I happened to hit Target earlier today with my younger daughter and we were reminiscing about all those summer trips to Target to stock up on camp needs: toiletries and sunscreen and bug spray, etc.! It's weird not to be doing that, and not to be picking up little goodies to ship off in care packages. So, is this where the BV's hide when they have no more $$ to spend? Seems like a nice place,

Hi beth001 - or should that be "Purse Slut" - love that! Of course you are welcome here!
I don't have any "children away at camp" stories to share, but I did go to Girl Guidecamp once and the only thing I can really remember about it now was that they made me eat my peas... growing up my brother had severe food allergies and therefore my mom would always take it very seriously if he said he didn't want to eat something (if he ate something he shouldn't he would usually throw it right back up...) and I must admit that even though I didn't have allergies I did make use of the "I can't eat it - it just doesn't feel right in my mouth" excuse when I really didn't like something (top of the list - green peas) and she wouldn't therefore force me to eat them. But at camp no such luck - and I remember being faced with this huge pile of green peas on my plate and being told I had to clean my plate and having absolutely no idea how I was going to get through them. I finally realized that if I hid one or two in a bite of something else I couldn't taste them and could therefore get them down... not sure now if I ended up eating all of them that way or if I just ate enough that they took pity on me and let me leave the rest! Ah, memories... |

Welcome Beth!!! Purse Slut!! So funny!
I have no summer camp stories, just the trips to the airport to send my kids to their father in TN. It was tough, but a time when my DH and I could spend with each other. We married when my youngest was almost 3, so we never had that honeymoon period of a marriage. All I can say is that now that they are grown, we savor our time together and are thankful that our daughter lives in the same city. Now, if I could only get my son to move back, life would be grand. AS a child, I never went to camp, but spent time with my Grandparents in a small town in EAst Texas. What wonderful memories I have of that time. They owned a small grocery/feed store and meat market which my Uncle still runs. It was wonderful to have the "country time" for a city girl. How else would I know how to put a worm on a hook?? haha OT- I knew it would rain here today!! We bought a small spa for our deck, which was delivered today and it's pouring out right now. Go figure. |

BM, Maybe I was around 10....I was invited to a friend's house for dinner. Her mom served peas and I hated peas...still do. I spent the entire dinner time wondering how I was going to handle those peas....I finally said I'm allergic to peas....lol. My older daughter called them green balls when she was young.

Ya'll are so funny with the pea stories!!! I LOVE sweet peas and black-eyed peas and can make a meal out of them!!! Every New Year's Day, I make stewed black-eyed peas with sausage and rice and a big pan of cornbread. Guess that's a Texas thing.
So, don't come to my house on New YEar's !! LOL Although, I will serve some raspberry Bellinis and champagne, of course. |

We finally got a letter from our son today, and I'm back to a total wreck.
He sounds OK, but not quite right. My husband and I immidiately wrote a card and I'll be sending it tomorrow via express mail, but oh why didn't I write him before he wrote me? What was I thinking? Why can't I send one to him right this moment?I guess I am too used to our instant communication (email, text, mobile) and forgot how to effectively use snail mail..., gah. ssc0619, did you hear from your DD today? goldenflower. ![]() beth, welcome! yes, this is where I hang around when I 1)don't have any new BV coming, 2)turn into a total attention whore like now, and 3)want to get all sorts of information without venturing out to other sub forums. And I always find we all have quite a lot in common, like, I don't like pea either.

I'm okay with dried peas (black-eyed-peas are dried, right?) - I actually like them quite a lot! I just don't like the green ones (green balls LOL). So can I still come to your house for New Years, Kroquet - with Bichon Lover of course?!

BookerMoose - I hated peas when I was young too. My mom fixed frozen peas and carrots a lot and they were hard as rocks. We (the kids) called them "balls and blocks".
Our parents didn't eat dinner with us most of the time so as soon as we were served and they went in the other room, we got up and dumped our peas down the garbage disposal. kroquet - Cornbread, yum! Raspberry bellinis sound good, too. Mid- , I am so sorry. If you still have concerns can you call the camp director and ask to speak to your son's counselor(s)? That may help allay some of your worries. Your son will get your letter the day after tomorrow and he will be so happy to hear from you. Will the camp allow you to send "care packages"? Those meant a lot to me when I was away at camp and my kids really enjoyed them when I sent them. beth - Welcome to the chat thread! |

So, can we have the BV get together at kroquet's on new year's day '10 maybe??
![]() ---- Ah, thank you, goldenflower. My husband left a voice message today with the counselor but they didn't get back to us. They didn't when I first called either. Everything seems slow there. Our son probably will not extend his stay and we will get him this coming Saturday, so no time for a care package, but I will send his dog's pics with our card tomorrow. Four more days... |
