^^ Cute dog, Jane! Very photogenic.

Clearly, I'm not as talented as some of you are. I tried to make homemade peppermint candy this afternoon. I went straight from the original 1879 recipe as re-printed in the NYT magazine last week. I got the sugar to carmelize and it formed candy when it cooled on my sheet, it didn't taste like peppermint (though my whole house smelled of peppermint and sweetness!). It looks great in an old-fashioned way, and it tastes good and warm-sweet, like hardened carmelized sugar would. I just don't know why the extract didn't add that much flavor. Oh, well! It was a fun experiment, anyway.

Jane, Kona is lovely and looks great in the snow!

My hens actually came out today, you can see one under the coop.
we never get snow like this in Ireland so I'm glad we are spending the holidays in the US this year.

Hobbies? I like to knit and weave, just finished this shawl, now I need to add the fringe and take it off the loom, it's for my 8yr's teacher's b-day next month.
What hobbies do you guys have?

The snow continues to come down here too - I don't know where I am it but it sure doesn't feel like Vancouver!! Our dogs are having a blast - even our 12 year old acts like a puppy when it snows... it is like all of her aches and pains just disappear and it is wonderful to watch her kicking up her heels and racing around at full speed.

Is anyone else afraid to carry any nice bag in this weather - even when it stops snowing and is clear and nice like it was for a couple of days in between snowstorms last week? I just have a fear that everything I touch is going to get covered in salt and grime - I can just picture slipping and having my bag go flying into a dirty pile of salty snow. It gives me the shivers... so for now I am resigned to the fact that I am just going to be carrying my oldest and least special bag for the foreseeable future until this strange weather goes away for good!!

^^^That's how I have been feeling. I have my two new beautiful BVs sitting in their dustbags, just wanting to be used. I've been using a Tods Pashmy Bag because of the weather--everything just wipes right off!

jane, it is still snowing here in the city. The neighborhood kids have been at it again, sledding down the street for the last 6+ hours. We got 8 inches last night and today so far. There is a crust on top of the snow and the Corgis hate this. They have become weather wimps! BookerMoose, did you take any pics of the beagles in the snow? I have not used my BVs in this snow. Even though I spray them with AppleGarde, I have just been using a Lindy, that is bulletproof when it gets wet. Seattle has no salt trucks, so I don't have to worry about stains on my suede boots.

LT Bag Lady, we have a hobby in common..I am also a weaver. I have also been working on a scarf. Weaving is so relaxing. I sold my heavy 45" floor loom last year and want to get a 36" fold up Mighty Wolf with 8 heddles...some day. The shawl you made looks really pretty, what type of yarn did you use? Have you ever woven with Tencel? I love woolens and cotton. My other hobbies are gardening and the internet.

Hobbies: running, cooking (not desserts, though), and singing. In the spring, I hope to add gardening to the mix--this is our first attempt at vegetables because we have a bit of a problem with deer thinking that our back yard is their foraging area and campground (some mornings we find families of them asleep back there).

I don't envy you all with the mounds of snow, but I'm not looking forward to my commute tomorrow morning--we got ice here instead of snow. My parents live upstate, and they got both! I haven't used my BVs yet because one of them is a Christmas present, and the other just hasn't come out yet. I'm so new to BV that I haven't decided what to do about carrying it in inclement weather. I think I'd carry it on clear days and take the usual precautions not to slip on anything.

TODS Pashmy on wet days for me too. Last year I dropped my TODS Miky in the snow, no harm done, I grabbed her very quickly! No more leather bags in snow or rain.
Cheers,

I used a Mohair for that shawl. I only have the triangle loom, takes up a lot of room but looks good in a room at the same time. I think of it as a piece of furniture. Every October I go with all my knitting and weaving friends to the Sheep & Wool festival in Rhinebeck, NY.

blueiris, You might try peppermint oil next time. Extracts tend to evaporate when heated and even if you added the extract off the heat, the retained heat could still cause much of the extract to evaporate.

Like you, I'm too new to BV to have much experience using one in snowy or rainy weather but I think I'll err on the side of caution. I knocked over a glass of water the other night and got the bottom of my torchon hobo wet. I snatched it up very quickly and blotted off the water, but I could hardly breathe until I was sure it was okay!

L T baglady, I love your shawl! It's really pretty. I'm sure your son's teacher will be thrilled.

jane, Your dog looks so happy! One of our dogs loves the snow and the other tiptoes in it, and cries if her feet get too cold. I'm sending you positive baby vibes!

I can't believe all the snow in areas that usually don't get much, if any. Totally wacky! We're in the deep freeze here right now. Our high temp today was -4 F. With the wind chill, the temperature was approximately -25 F. We have around 18" of snow on the ground, and up to 4" more is expected on Tuesday. Hello, winter!

My hobbies are reading, cooking, baking, and cold-process soap making. I used to do lampwork (I made glass beads on an oxygen-propane torch), but I had to stop when my eyesight got worse from ocular rosacea. It was just too dangerous to use that extremely hot torch when I wasn't really sure if I was working in the flame or not, and after a couple of second- and third-degree burns, I learned my lesson for good! I think DH was relieved, and so were the kids. They all worried that I was going to burn down the house.

Thanks for the advice. I thought the same thing. I added the extract with the pan off the heat, but it still made an aromatic *poof* with several popping sounds. I double-checked the re-printed recipe, and it calls for extract, not oil. Maybe they re-printed it inaccurately.
