Default Is this normal?
I purchased my first BV from the outlet last week and I was really excited to receive my bag. However, when I opened the box and looked at the bag, I noticed the bag is not in perfect condition.

Since I've never bought a BV bag before, I am not sure about the quality of their leather. But as you can see in the picture, it seems like they didn't trim the leather very well and I could see the fabric hanging on the edges of the leather. Is this normal? Would the leather eventually look like this after some wear and tear?

mine was from BV boutique and it did, after the first time i wore it. but i would say the fraying was minimal and inevitable as the bag is woven from strips of leather?

lets hear what the experts here say...

Totally normal! I know that it bothers some, but not me. You could only prevent this by coating each edge with that plastic stuff everyone seems to use, and which eventually cracks and looks awful... not to mention that the bag would not drape. If you can get over the completely reproducible perfection look, you will be able to appreciate a largely handmade item of natural materials... and appreciate the differences - even consider it part of the beauty.

If you are careful and good at surgery, you can clip it off with tiny sharp scissors. It doesn't bug me, though. This is very characteristic of leather.

Funny. I have a couple of BV's that are several years old and beautifully worn and aged and I even looked with a magnifying glasss and did not see this. Maybe with time the edges might soften and curl under a bit? My only brand new BV is the copper rame and it does not have the freying either although I think the leather is coated with something.

Since the other BV's gals say this is typical, I would not worry about it getting worse...only better!

Hi there, wontonies. I too agree that it is quite natural. This topic comes up from time to time, as it is rather nerve-wracking especially if you are relatively new to BV.

Here are a couple of threads on it with some pics.
Sloane Owners! A Question!
Any recommendations?

I wouldn't worry too much. Enjoy your lovely BV! What style is it?

Thanks for the info Mid...they are very informational for a newbie like me. Since this is my first BV, I've got the classic Veneta...can't go wrong with it right?

I think the amount of "fraying" (and I hate to use that term because it implies something more akin to damage) probably varies depending on the type of leather used. My White Grommet Veneta has none. My (much newer!) Crimson Veneta has the same kind of fraying as yours. Yes, it is a part of the exquisitely hand-crafted nature of BV. Have you seen the video of Thomas Maier on the Martha Show? They show a woman weaving a BV bag. It will knock your socks off!
