doloresmia - Python is illegal in California because it is considered an endangered species. It is a really old law that has been on the books for about 25 years or so.

They are going to try to outlaw croc in California in 2010. I hope they don't - but in case they do, now would be the time to buy it!

Absolutely! People carry python out here all the time. Many people go to Nevada to buy their python bags, shoes, etc. It just cannot be sold in California or shipped to California.

Many designers are getting around this law by calling their python bags "water snake". Dior does this quite a bit.
