The polishing compound called Jeweler's Rouge (because it is red) is a finely ground iron oxide, which is used for removing scratches. I used it on a job years ago. It works by doing a fine abrasion of the surface. The other polishing cloths chemically dissolve the silver sulfide, which is the tarnish. Tarnish on silver isn't silver oxide. Silver does not readily form compounds with oxygen. But in city areas where there is a lot of pollution, mainly sulfur compounds, silver tarnishes more readily. So, if the area you live is not humid, but has lots of smog (L.A.) your silver can tarnish. |
