Default How long will it last?
Hi,

I fell in love with the Bottega Veneta Design some month before, now I want to buy one (I think it will be a Veneta or a wallet). I love the very soft leather, but I'm a bit concerned that it's too sensitive. So I could damage it easy. Did you have problems with this? I want to use it and not to leave it in the dustbag at home. The SA told me, I don't have to worry, lambskin is very robust, but I'm not sure if she is telling the truth (don't know, how long she is working there).

Can you tell me about your experiences please?

You know, it's a lot of money and I want to use my future veneta for years.

Thanks a lot,
Mohnblume

I have 2 vintage woven (intrecciato) bags that is over 30 years old. Aside from a little darkening, they is still in fabulous condition... no rips, tears, etc. I have a couple that are around 8 years old, and they also look good - although they are cervo (deer and unwoven). I use my wallets hard, and have 3 that I trade off every few months. They hold up as well as any I have ever had. I look at it this way: keeping the bag just as you bought it is impossible if you use or wear it, but the aging (and patina) should compliment or enhance it. Rips and tears, stains are not normal wear and tear. But I must say, I do take care of my bags, protecting them from rain, the chemicals in styling salons, and do not carry pens, makeup, or food in the bag unless they are in some kind of case - i.e. pen pouch, makeup case, plastic ziplock. I do not baby them, but don't just toss them on the floor or in the kitchen.

With a little forethought and care, you will have your bags and smalls for many, many years! (especially because these are not trendy)

I have several BV woven bags. I adore them. I agree with Baggiana. BV is very easy to take care. and they last a long time, and they are classy.
but if you are getting a white colot bag, beware the conners, that's where the bag get wore out easily. hope this help.

Thanks a lot (also for moving, wasn't sure where to post). You helped me a lot.

Can you tell me about karung? I could get a wallet in karung, but I'm also concerned (ok, perhaps I think a little bit too much) about rubbing in the purse, getting in "too close contact" with my book, phone, tissues, make-up-case, ... Can it be an everyday-wallet or should it be for special occasions?

^Karung is watersnake with very small scales, so that there is little to no lifting of the scales - and I would say closer to no lifting. I have a ferro intrecciato karung wallet, and it has held up beautifully. I love it! It is very, very tough, but does not have the silky softness, nor the smell of nappa/lambskin. As I said, I use wallets hard! Because it is an exotic skin you should rub a good reptile conditioner on the hide about every 6 months or so - I do not know what you could find in Munich, but you should talk to both BV and a good shoe/leather repair shop to see what is available. You are best to sellect a dark color. I can only vouch for ferro, and it looks better today then when I got it. On the otherhand, the ottone nappa interior of this wallet has shown some wear due to the credit card rubbing, but that is normal, and does not bother me.

If you have the time and opportunity, visit your boutique with the various wallets and bags and handle them all - try them on. You can then make a better decision about which leather is right for you. Another possiblity is goat, which is very, very tough - maggiore, or chevre.

Whatever bags you do select, make certain that you spray them with a non-silicone based water/soil repellant - very lightly 2-3 times waiting an hour in between each time - they stay nicer looking that way. Again, I urge to stay away from very light colors as they will pick up the colors of other leathers/fabrics. By the way, the wallet that I have been carrying for the past 5 months is made of snake - probably ayers- limo (a taupe) in color. I have had not problems with color transfer or staining on this wallet. Again, it is different than nappa, and not woven. There are lots of threads on this page that will discuss leather care, etc. You may want to read them all.

Happy shopping!!!... there is no rush. Take the time to find your perfect first wallet.

Thanks for your very good advice, I will search the FAQ about reptil leather care (didn't know, that there is s/th like that), if I can't find anything I will try ebay.com or look for onlineshops will international shipping. You're right, there is no rush.

At the moment, I'm a little scary because my last wallet fell apart after 12 month and even before there were a lot rubbed off spots. And I really loved this wallet.
