Hi NicAddict, you know how strong the rain can be here in the Philippines. It comes also with the wind. But it's predictable. So what do, when I bring a plastic bag or the dust bag and I put my bag inside. Because even with an umbrella I don't want small drops into my bag. I always bring a big scarf to always protect my bags with the elements that can make them dirty.

Sometimes just carry a big enough plastic bag to protect my bag

I was recently discussing this with Bryan. In my bag, I carry a dry-bag. Something that you would put your belongings into if you were going on a canoe trip to keep the things dry should your boat capsize. This little portable dry-bag unrolls to hold my large veneta or belly - or even my large (extra-large) circle bag. I just role the top closed, hook it together and carry that while all the world around me gets wet... my baby is protected! I purchased mine at REI. It is called an AirVent (large) and it is ultra lightweight (2 oz) and waterproof and breathes so that your bag does not get moldy if stored (though I do not think that is really the issue). You need one!!! Will your bag fit? Yes, If you are willing to fold it a little. There is no one as particular as I am when it comes to keeping my bag dry. I even keep a fun running in my closet to circulate the air, so that my bags can breathe. The drybag is listed on the REI website:

Thank you Baggiana ! I am sure it will look weird stuffing a Cabat inside that .. thing.... LOL. Will have a look.

Hm, I just remembered that I got a rain coat for my Birkin at Hermès today and just tried it out on the Cabat and it works !!
It doesn't cover the bottom but that is not needed for me. I just want to top and sides protected in case it gets bad and I am actually out for a change in bad weather.

Whew, now I can use the umbrella for myself again and not for my bag

I'm interested to see how the Birkin "raincoat" looks like on the Cabat. NicAddict, if you have the time appreciate if you could share some photos. TIA!

i actually pre-treat my bags with a protectant.
I think it helps. I feel more assured that even if it gets wet, i can easy dry it and it will be alright for the leather :)

Yes, I suppose that it could look weird... probably does. If is definitely NOT a fashion statement! But water stains look worse to me and can be permanent. I have only had to use the drybag twice, but both times it was an unexpected deluge, I did not have an umbrella, and I was happy to have this tiny thing in my purse to protect it. If you can find a fashionable raincoat to fit your bag, and it will give you the protection against water, then all the better!!! - fashion statement and protection!

BTW, I do pre-treat my bags for water and soil, but that is inadaquate in a downpour. And sometimes the bag will dry, and you will not see a water-stain... but I don't want to take a chance.

Here we go...

In the pictures, I am using the 'rain coat' from a 40cm Birkin. I think it works very well. I never expected to have 100% coverage and just wanted to protect the main parts. I think I got what I wanted originally:

pic 1: shows the size of the rain coat when folded (actually, that particular pouch holds 2 rain coats.)

pic 2: Hold hand through the whole and lead the handles through the hole

pic 3, 4 and 5: Look of bag with rain coat on.

Now that I think about it, if I had tucked the sides in there would probably be even more coverage on the sides of the bag.

This rain coat also allows me still to access items inside the bag easier than if it the entire bag would be shoved into another bag.

I couldn't possibly imagine myself trying to spray anything on my lovely Cabat. I would rather leave it at home or in the car than risking ruining it... sorry, I am probably waaaay too paranoid here but I do not get these bags every day

NicAddict - There is a PF member named doreenjoy. She said that she carries a folded lightweight nylon Longchamp LePilage bag to use in the event of rain.

That's pretty good coverage... thanks for sharing the photos!

Now if only we could get our own raincoat without buying a Birkin. BV should make one too... paging Mr. Maier...

jburgh !!! Why have I never thought of this...? This sounds like a much nicer option as the Pliage looks significantly better than a simple plastic raincoat. Thank you for remembering doreenjoy's mentioning of this.

I just had a quick look at the Longchamp website and the largest I have found is 55x40x23 cm / 21¾x15¾x9 inch. Although large, this would be probably a very good choice as there would not be too much fiddling around and the Cabat could easily slide in and out of the Pliage

Here is an interesting one http://www.longchamp.com/FRONT/LONGC...&colorProduit=
Smaller at 45x35x23 cm / 17¾x14x9 inch but should still be able to fit a medium Cabat.

Thanks again jburgh.

You are welcome. doreenjoy took me to Longchamp to show me them back in April. I purchased a sturdier travel bag to carry in my suitcase as an extra carry-on, if needed. The nylon ones were all folded up on a rack and looked like a good idea because they are so compact. Is there a Longchamp near you to check them out?
