Thank you :) I love Yelle but I'm not sure whether you'll enjoy Christopher Mae and Cali as well because their music isn't really similar to Yelle's songs.

I also like this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGeZJwcZNiE

I'm just now getting into French songs thanks to the Madeleine Peyroux station that I listen to on last.fm. They've played some Stacey Kent who is an Anglophone singer, but she has an album out in French called Raconte-Moi.

As others have mentioned, there's Carla Bruni. I've also listened to some songs by Coralie Clément and Paris Combo. Paris Combo is more of a fusion kind of band singing in French, but using the influence of North African sounds as well as American jazz.

Lastly, I like this one guy, Ben L'Oncle. He's kind of funk/jazzy/soul, and he's awesome, if you ask me. (Found out about him earlier this year.)

Serge Gainsbourg! Love him!

I used to be very into the French dance house thing (neu disco scene in Athens was huuuuge during the late 90s early 00s), Roger Sanchez, Air, Bob Sinclair, Daft Punk, Galleon, St Germain etc. I'm still liking Air, the rest I don't listen anymore because I don't go out dancing as much. I think this scene has been replaced with hip hop now in clubs.

Gosh I'm old...

Johnny Hallyday is a legend in his own right. He's the French (well, Belgian) answer to Elvis and sings rock n roll. Also, he's collaborated with contemporary artists in the past few years. Noir, C'est Noir kick started his career way back in the 60s.

I second Paris Combo! Love them. A song to listen with the usual chanteuse, Belle du Barry, is Motus or Living Room. A great song with a different vocalist (the cellist, I think) is Discordance. :)

Khaled is one of the biggest singers in the world, but not that well known in the west. He sings Rai (Algerian pop music with a political/social focus) and he switches between French and Arabic. Aicha is his most popular song, and another good one in French is Ne m'en voulez pas.

Faudel is another Algerian singer who sings in French and in the pop/r&b genre.

Really, if you're looking for a plethora of artists to listen to all at once, I suggest you enter in Putumayo French Cafe or Putumayo Acoustic French in youtube. Putumayo is a company that puts together mix albums containing popular artists of certain genres and countries and then gives a portion of their profits to charity. Through them, I have learned about so many great international artists!

YES, absolutely. I learned a lot of French this way. You can find lyrics online or along with the song in a lot of Youtube videos.

But unlike Elvis, he managed not to die unreasonably young, so now instead of being immortal he has for many people a bit of a silly has-been quality.

He is French.

Love Khaled, although I will point out that Aïcha was written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, whom I love more.

I've been learning French for a couple of years, and I would say my accent is pretty decent. Listening to French music will definitely help with pronunciation especially if you have the lyrics to sing along with, and get your ears acclimated to hearing and eventually understanding the language.
