Georgia Brown's is fun if you're in the mood for Southern food, it is pricey but worth it IMO. Its close to DC Coast, which has good seafood. If you're looking for a romantic dinner Marcel's is a cozy french place which is by Foggy Bottom (not sure who you're going to DC with...)

Close to the White House - Old Ebbitt has that wood paneled DC look, so its fun and if you go you can grab a drink at the rooftop bar of the Hotel Washington which is right by there (don't eat there though the food isn't that great). A casual place to eat by the White House on H street which is fun is Teaism, they have Asian inspired food like a Salmon Bento Box.

Kramer's Books and Afterwards Cafe in Dupont Circle is a bookstore/restaurant with American food, think fish and steak with great mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, but higher end then a dinner. Its a fun place with good cocktails and deserts. I like the steak sandwhich and the pastas and fish dishes are really good.

Zantanya is great, Turkish mezze. I love the flavored "sweet" rice, it has nuts and spices and the lamb kabobs are great. Its fun to mix up a couple of small dishes and share. Good humus and good cocktails too. Its close to Gallery Place, Chinatown, so its close enough to the Mall.

The Mall isn't a big restaurant area but for lunch you could check out the Native American museum, its fun and different. They have food inspired by the different regions of the US, like buffalo burgers, but I've also seen strawberry lilac soup. Its pricey for lunch but interesting.

Blue Duck Tavern has great duck (as you might guess) and is in the Dupont Circle area. Raku in Dupont Circle has good pan-Asian food if you're in the mood for sushi or pad thai.

Otherwise there is a place downtown that does the Argentinian steak thing, all you can eat meat, can't remember the name but if you're interested I can look it up. Also, if there a particular cuisine you're interested in let us know. DC has many Ethiopian restaurants, I don't know which is the best since it isn't really my thing though. There is also Russian place in Dupont, but since you're in a big city I'm sure you can get most of that as well.

Also check out Indebleu and Proof in that area for great drinks If you wanna get dressy and see style Oya in Penn Quater and Cafe Milano in Gtown. For a taste of the real DC go to U St (Tabaq fantastic view upstairs) Dukem, Marvins, Cafe St. Ex, Creme and Vinoteca. Enjoy the city!

Oya's Tuna Tempura Roll is SO good! I'd recommend going with the $20 lunch or $30 dinner prix fixe.

Jaleo's tapas are great too; definitely worth a try!

Matchbox, a pizzeria in Chinatown is also really good. (I know right? Italian place in Chinatown?)

I recommend:
Lauriol Plaza - Spanish (Mexican, Peruvian) VERY busy! Great Atmosphere!
http://www.lauriolplaza.com/

Take the Metro to Courthouse. Spend an afternoon in the area...great shopping includes Current Boutique (Consignment), ShoeFly (Shoes & Accessories) and 3 Sisters (lingerie). There is plenty more like Chicos, Origins, Ann Taylor and Crate and Barrel in the area too... After you work up an appetite walk back towards the metro and stop for Thai!!!

Sawatdee - Thai - Arlington, VA on the Orange Line Metro - Courthouse

And if you find yourself in Old Town, Alexandria, there are some wonderful shops to stop in as well. Then stop in at Cafe Salsa for some really wonderful food!

Laurial Plaza is my fave. The margaritas are TDF!!! I can't wait to move back in a month. PS. Be prepared to wait. Also in the Clarendon area (you can really walk from Courthouse), they have a south moon under boutique that is really fun and has great sales.

I really like Lebanese Taverna. Jaleo has been good each time I've visted (LOVE their sangria) and there's a little sushi place over by the Capitol...I need to find out the name. It's on a little half street, about 2 doors down from My Brother's Place.
