Default Virgin America Getting Super Strict on Carry-on Size
Just a heads up - on the last two Virgin America flights that I've been on they measured every rollerbag at the gate. If your bag is even a fraction of an inch over on any side (or they perceive it to be over) they make you check it. I saw a few that I didn't think were too big that got checked.

Thanks for the heads up. I am flying with Virgin to NYC this Thanksgiving and still bummed having to pay $20 for check-in luggage.
Oh well... gotta be strict with my carry on them :)

I recently flew to Seattle from SF via Virgin America and they only checked about 3 people, it was a full house. DBF was nervous because we noticed his carry on bag was a little bigger than their standard, luckily we didn't get checked. No one was checked on our flight back home either...

i can understand any airline checking. the problem with charging for checked luggage is that people try to sneak on larger than allowed carry-ons to save the money.

i read recently that virgin america is probably going to put in a carry-on boarding policy in which they allow people without a carry-on on and off the plane first so that the aisles dont get backed up from people trying to put things in over head bins. i thought it sounded like a good policy.

i personally love virgin america! i found their planes very enjoyable and the rates great.

I love Virgin, too - I was just surprised that they were doing that at the gate. I'm always very conscientious of my carryon's size... and weight. I'll never take a carryon that I can't easily lift over my head.

Slightly OT, but I think a bigger problem than oversize carryons is people taking multiple carryons. Like the person that has a roller bag, then a big backpack, then a shopping bag, then a big coat - and puts it all in the overhead bin. I'm a cranky traveler, so I've called people out on it a few times and made them put some of their crap under the seat :P

Wow, talk about major hogging!

I thought you could only have a carry-on bag and a personal item [like a coat or an umbrella or a purse or a backpack]? This is according to their website So I would imagine that people bringing more than one of these items would be called out

Thanks for the heads up on this. Virgin's been advertising great rates and I wanted to travel with them. I usually travel with Alaska and they're not that strict with the carry ons. I'll have to be wary on Virgin... in fact, I'll look up the measurement protocols on the Virgin site. Thanks again!!

That's a good policy, but I cant see it working when deplaning. I rarely see anyone remain in their seats when a PA is made to allow those people with super tight connections to get off first. Some care, but most don't. Only if there's a medical emergency and someone has to be carted off first, do people remain. It's probably more important on boarding though, since when people are leaving, they seem to get their stuff together alot quicker. Boarding can take like 30 minutes, while deplaning is 10.

I don't think this is a bad idea. Though I still think it's ridiculous for airlines to charged for checked bags. But I do get frustrated at the oversized carry ons. On my last flight, a man had an obviously oversized bag on the plane, and he stood in the aisle for 15 minutes trying to stuff it in the overhead bin. So of course, a couple of people that sat near him had no room for their stuff.
