Default Vacation at the end of August, any suggestions for where

My BF and I are planning to take a vacation at the end of August for 5-7 days. Any suggestions? I'd like to go to a beach, but not too hot (BF hates heat) or crowded. Also considering going north to Maine and just hanging out for a few days and eating seafood. We live in NYC and I would prefer not to travel too far.

I would love to go to Europe, but since August is a vacation month, am afraid that the cities will be quiet and the beaches too crowded.

Cape Cod or Nantucket are my two favorite quick vacation spots. A group of us girls go down the Cape every summer and always have the best time.

Most beaches are going to be crowded in August. Maybe Maryland Eastern shore area? Or upstate New York in the Finger Lakes region?

Thanks for the ideas. The Finger Lakes are beautiful in the summer. But I was hoping to go somewhere new.

I was thinking about the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico if we did the beach thing. I'll have to talk to the BF.

Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean is a 3.5 hour direct flight away from NY. Gorgeous beaches there.

Myrtle beach or Virginia beach. There's especially lots to do in Virginia. Williamsburg, williamsburg outlet, wine tasting, caverns and hiking/boating

I think we're going to stick to our original thought, southern maine beaches. We are just looking for a low key time, without the pressure of having to do touristy stuff if we were to travel somewhere further.

It looks like Kennebunk or Ogunquit are cute towns. Any other ideas?
