Hello!
I am trying to plan my honeymoon in Germany this year in September. I am not sure what cities we should stay in, but here is what we like to do, maybe you can recommend some things? - We love the outdoors -- so a place local to hiking in the Alps might be cool - We aren't the big city types, thinking of something a bit more casual and down to earth. - We are thinking of spending about 1 week ... and were thinking of spending a day or two in Amsterdam on the way through - We aren't really museum folks, but would enjoy good food, beer, and wine! - I wouldn't mind seeing architecture or castles. - We wouldn't mind checking out Oktoberfest... is their an easy or recommended way to do that? - Did you stay in a particular hotel or place that you would definitely go back to? Gosh, I hope that's enough for you to try and point me in the right direction! Any help would be really appreciated!! |

Cologne is really beautiful, but kind of boring. Munich is fun. A lot of people gather in the heart of the city for the Glockenspiel daily. If you really wanna see the Alps...I would suggest taking a train that runs through them. When I was in Europe, we took a train from Munich to Salzburg..it was beautiful.

I think it's easy to use trains in Germany (according to my brother who lives in Berlin). It's like most other things in Germany: Fast, efficient and reliable.

You can read more about the area here :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garmisch-Partenkirchen It's beautiful!! If you're looking for a really sweet and quaint area...look up Hopfen am See. We stayed there for a week 2 years ago and it was absolutely beautiful. Close to the mountains, small town, great food..close to the castles..beautiful nature. |

I'm not from the South so can't really give any recommendations about locations but if you're planning to stay for the Oktoberfest, make sure to book soon cause Munich will be absolutely filled with people!!
![]() A really famous area for tourists might as well be the "Rheingau valley". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheingau If you're planning on travelling by car to Amsterdam, you'd probably drive along it and if you choose to go by train, it would most likely be the direction to Amsterdam as well!!

I got engaged in Cologne.. it's a one day town at most. But the Dom was insane and we had a few nice meals along the river. I would love to see Berlin but we didn't have the scheduled time.
We arrived in Cologne via the high speed from AMS - super easy and (I'm not sure how your trip will evolve) cheap from AMS - but we purchased our tickets ahead of time. (all that will fall out as you plan your trip around Europe!). I've hear other good things about the local trains in Europe and good things about the rest of Germany - obviously listen to other TPF'ers here! |

Trains are wonderful, but apparently planes are cheaper. We booked our tickets from Munich to Berlin for a mere 6 euro each with Air Berlin (I think the 28th of July, I don't have the confirmations handy)... You could book the tickets very cheap if you book them early enough.
Hubby says that his favorites are Cologne, and Hamburg, and he is very romantic, he also loves Switzerland and the cute castle on the Alps (Neuschwanstein Castle???). Also Potsdam a suburb of Berlin is very scenic, with a palace (called Sans Souci, it has cute gardens), and lakes. The 1945 Potsdam Conference took place there. Unfortunately I'm not romantic, so I have no idea what is a romantic place. I like shopping in Tokyo and London. And tanning on a beach. |
