Buy a lightweight structured soft-side (nylon fabric) or hard shell (polycarbonate) bag with zippers as opposed to snap on buckle fasteners. This is the recent trend favored by most travelers all over the world and you will see brands which had been well known for their hard shell designs like Samsonite, are no longer leaders as they are slowly introducing softer and lighter bags to keep up with their competing brands.
Most airports do not allow you to lock your luggage, and if you have snap on buckle fasteners they can pop open when roughly handled or when airport staff do not shut it properly after inspection. Once while collecting my Samsonite Oyster from the conveyor belt at Manchester airport, I found all the fasteners open luckily contents didn't spill out thanks for the wide elastic band accessory over the bag. One big reason why zippers are preferred these days. Choose plastic zipper teeth over metallic ones which are most likely to jam.
Nylon is much lighter than leather and hard plastic, very important feature because some countries are particular about luggage weight, e.g. Japan. Increasingly, airlines are allowing only 1 check in bag per person, more bags and you have to pay (cheaper to ship!). Remember the heavier the empty bag, the less you can fit in to meet the maximum weight allowance. I don't know about you but when I travel, half the bag is filled with handbags and shoes
Brands I find working for me:
Mandarina Duck (#1 in quality, durability, style, and lightweight)
Osprey (great for rolling backpacks, very light and strong)
Kipling (just the right size and height, very very light, disadvantage short warranty like 2 yrs, but I've not used the warranty in 6 yrs of owning it)
Hush Puppies (lightweight and multifunctional pockets on outside). I don't know if these brands are available in Canada.
I used to be an ardent user of Samsonite and Delsey, have had 2 Samsonite Oysters (supposed to be strongest in the world) broken & misaligned within less than 5 years of use, and my 3rd Samsonite which is a soft-sider with zippers, is already giving way. I've borrowed my mom's Delsey once, pretty good structure but quite heavy for a soft-side bag.
