OMG OMG We talk about Sansei ALL THE TIME!! It was sooooooooo super freaking incredible.... We were in Maui for a week and I believe we ate at Sansei 3 times! Love the sushi happy hour..... oh and the green apple tarte....... We have recommended Sansei to all of our friends who go to Maui, and they come back with stellar reviews too. It was absolutely the **BEST** sushi I have ever had. |

I have been to Maui many times since the 80's and the crowds are much different than they were back in the day. We go to Hawaii every year for Spring Break and Maui was the island this past March. I highly recommend buying a guidebook.
*Lahina (Ka'anapali) is shockingly NOT busy anymore. But it's still definitely a destination place with a ton of great restaurants and a fun variety of shops, as well as a huge number of activities! You can eat expensive or cheap. *Wailea is chic and everything, but since you're price sensitive, that might not suit you? *I like swimming the beaches in Kihei the best of any of the Maui towns. (Maui takes pride in not grooming their sandy beaches so you have to cope with coral and rocks, so wear watershoes, like Keens, to save your toes.) It's an older resort town but you can rent a condo from the internet and get more bang for your buck. Kihei is very casual and inexpensive. This is where you'll get a feel of what it's like to live like a local. As for your original query, I like having a car in Maui. The ultimate Maui experience is taking a day to drive "The Road to Hana". Pick up a sack lunch/snacks in the morning (the earlier you leave, the more time you'll have to stop and play), take regular & homeopathic motion-sickness remedies, CD's for the radio, wear clothes/shoes/towel to play in the water with, and you'll have a great time dunking in roadside waterfalls!! There are 600 turns and 60 one way bridges. Oh, did I mention the road is narrow and winding? It also rains, but don't let that deter you. It's a rain forest and that's how it stays lush and green. The Road to Hana is a unique Hawaiian experience. Look for wild chickens and feral cats at the rest stops! Have a great time!! And don't pack a lot of clothes. Get into the Aloha spirit and relax!! T-shirts, shorts, swimsuit and sundress are all you need. |

I just returned from Maui a week ago, stayed at the Sheraton resort at Black Rock/Ka'anapali beach and it was amazing! There is a footpath along the beach to Whalers Village and the other resorts (Westin, Hyatt, Marriott) so you'll have a good variety of restaurants/bars/shops very close by. And the town center of Lahaina is very short drive away should you want to try the restaurants there or go shopping.
Black Rock is great for snorkeling although you should always have a friend with you and be sure you're a good swimmer as there are quite big waves during this time of year. I had a wonderful experience of swimming with a sea turtle there. We were there for a week and rented a car, but we didn't use it everyday. We spent 3 days just relaxing at the beach and the other 3 days driving to Hana, Haleakala and other sites. It really depends on how much of Maui you want to see. If you're happy with just sitting on the beach or by the pool the whole time and you're at a place like Ka'anapali Beach where there's loads of restaurants/shops nearby, you will not need a car for the entire week. I'd definitely recommend Ka'anapali beach if you're looking for a place that is within walking distance to restaurants and shops. |
