Talking Key West, FL!!! Any tips?

My bf is taking me to Florida for ten days in the beginning of July for my birthday! We're staying at his parents condo in Ft. Myers and we're planning to drive down to Key West (taking the overseas highway!)for 4 days in the middle of our trip! I've never been to the Keys so I'm really excited!

Anyone ever been? What's it like? So far I've been told that I need to stop at Holiday Isle (in Islamorada) for their Tiki Bar on the way down and Sloppy Joes Bar on Duval St. Would love to hear any recommendations!!!

When are you driving down? I would suggest driving down as early as you can on a non-weekend day. There is only 1 road that takes you to Key West and back so if there is a lot of traffic you may be sitting on that one road for a long time (usually happens on Saturday or Sunday).

I would suggest you parasail or snorkel while you are in Key West. The water is amazing and the weather right now is perfect for that sort of activity. I suggest you visit www.tripadvisor.com and put in the key word "key west". There are so many reviews of hotels and things to do in case you need some tips.

PS - Try to get a hotel that has parking and is centrally located. This will ensure that you can just walk to the main drag of Key West.

Blue Heaven for breakfast/brunch - a must
sunset mallory square - one of those things that "everybody" does, but there's just something about it....

oh, girl.
where shall i begin???

do you like animals?
you have to stop in holiday isle at the tiki bar. its the site of many a drunken night and a keys landmark. everyone has been there, but doesn't remember much except the tiki bar.

a little north of that is The Theatre of the Sea. its so cool! wanna pet a dolphin? just ask during the show. want to see sharks? gorgeous nurse sharks in awesome lagoon style pools. no glass between you and them. so cool!

hemingway's house and make sure to look for the cats!

The southernmost tip, you have to take a little tourist pic there and post it for us. everyone does it, but its still cool.

you won't be bored. go charter fishing. go day drinking! only eat at small mom and pop places. talk to locals. chill out! its lovely!

hope you have a blast!

Hey, we're going too in August! We're taking the kids so it's obviously not going to be a "party" trip but that's OK....has anyone done the Dry Tortuga thing, where you take the ferry?

I saw some pics online of the Dry Tortugas and it looks awesome! Would love to hear anyones experiences going there! I don't have my bf convinced to go yet but I'll think he'll want to do it once we're out there! The thing with the ferry is that its pretty much and all-day thing and he doesn't want to make a day out of it (I wouldnt mind though, it looks fun to me!) You can charter a seaplane to go for shorter periods of time but it's more expensive, hopefully I can talk him into it!!
