Have a traveler's pouch that goes under your clothes. Don't wear a backpack or a noncrossbody purse. Try local foods instead of sticking with the international chains. Bring comfortable walking shoes. Don't drink too much. Learn some key phrases before you get there. Check in with your family back at home at least every other day. Don't take TOO many pictures -- make them good. You don't want to be overwhelmed when you get home.

Thanks so much for this thread!
I so agree with learning a bit of the language. At very least, hello, please, excuse me and thank you go a long way. Profnot suggested bringing older panties - I suggest taking that a bit further. If you have shoes or clothes that are comfortable and appropriate, but you were planning to retire, travel in those. At the end of the trip, donate them to maids or a charity you find one, or even toss them - leaving plenty of room in your bag and less laundry to do when you get home (plus more closet space for your new travel purchases). |
