Default Can you CARRY-ON those rolling SUITCASES on the plane?

I'd like to bring a small suitcase so I can store all of my expensive, designer clothes/jeans/shoes. I don't want to check it because I'm afraid that it will get lost or items may even be stolen. Do they usually allow bringing an item this big? Will it fit on the overhead compartment?

I've never brought a small rolling suitcase on a plane before, only a duffel bag (but its too small for all of my items).

Random, but...am I allowed to carry a 7 oz. jar of Creme de la Mer on the plane or a big, heavy jar of loose powder from La Mer? I wouldn't want these items to be stolen when they're checked in.

Thanks in advanced!

The dimensions must not exceed the permitted dimensions for carry on luggage by the airliner. Go to their website to find out. If traveling on budget or small airplanes, they have more strict regulations, permitting smaller bags. I remember having to check in my carry on Ted which satisfies most airlines as a carry on bag.

Carry on loose powder - yes
Carry on liquids and creams - no if you exceed total allowable limits.

The carry-on in your pic will go aboard regular jets of most airlines, though it's always wise to check the carry-on guidelines when you travel. You should check the security guidelines for any containers you want to take on board. Every airport website has a link to current security requirements. One thing they're strict about is the size of the container you're carrying aboard, not just what's in it. That jar of powder might be too big, but check to be sure, because much as you might fear it being stolen from your check-through luggage, you'd have to leave it behind for sure (or not take your flight) if it doesn't pass security! Your chances of arguing something onto the plane are slim. I've known people who had to leave behind $$$ worth of grooming products.

Oh, and one more thing: Often regional jets (those smaller ones that seat about 50-70 people) will ask passengers to "gate check" their larger carry-on bags, strollers, etc.. The rolling carry-ons generally get gate-checked, meaning they ask you to check as you board the plane. That's because some luggage won't fit in the smaller overhead bins on this kind of jet. Gate checked luggage is picked up as soon as you exit the plane, either on the ground or in the jet way, rather than at the luggage carousel. I never mind gate-checking my carry-on. I DO mind if I'm asked to check it as regular baggage, though!

The powder should be fine but any liquid or cream over 3 ounces will be confiscated if they find it.

You might want to check out the TSA's helpful What To Know Before You Go webpage.

I worked at store that sold suitcases and most airlines allow roollon suitcases but they must be smaller than 22"h by 14"w by 9"d. To be 100% I would call the airline you are going on cause sometimes they only alow up t o 20" rollons. Also make sure that you suitcase is under the max weight - I don't remember the number for that. Good luck!

according to the FAA, all carry-ons can be up to 45 linear inches (the sum of height, width and depth of the bag). but from what i'm hearing, different airlines may have different requirements. my trusty approved carry-on that i've used for years was too large to fit under the seats on my northwest airlines flight two weeks ago. it fit under the seats a few years ago. i have to wonder if the planes are reducing storage space to fit in more customers or something.

^^^Bella: Yes, the under the seat thing has been mentioned in the news ALOT lately. Apparently they are getting smaller, and they are also clogging them up with the entertainment systems, etc.

Also be careful about the 45 linear inches thing....I was reading somewhere (can't remember where) that it is the other guideline (lxwxh) that they will be trying to enforce more.

However, if you do online checkin....they will have no clue and can only force you to gate check.

As for your LaMer creme. Only 3 oz. is allowed ...so you're going to have to transfer some of it to a smaller container. I usually do this will all my facial stuff...the containers are too big and bulky so I transfer an ounce or two into a different container. Remember...the total of all your liquids, gels, and cremes MUST fit into a quart sized ziploc bag.

just bought a battenkill rollaway suit carrier for my son - same one i bought for DH 15 years ago -- from orvis. it's regulation size for carry-on and fits in the overhead not under the seat. your creams etc will be subject to the quart baggie retsrictions etc.

Hope it works out, fretting something is going to be stolen has got to be one of the most awful things about travelling.
