Default Alaska in September for the Aurora...anyone done this?

My husband and I are trying to knock off one of our must-sees (the Aurora in Alaska) from our list before we have a second child, and it's looking like September is the best time to go for us(and for the Aurora). We're thinking of flying in to Anchorage, then taking the train to Fairbanks for a few days. Anyone have any tips on where to stay or what to do during the day?

I think I'd skip Fairbanks in September--hope no fairbanks people here--but not much to see. They have a great ice festival later in winter, that's great but otherwise not much.

I went brown/black bear salmon feeding viewing couple years ago at McNeil falls/Katmai---spectacular. Don't have those pix to upload, but have pix from British Columbia--experience is similar--attached pix.

Town of Sitka is beautiful also!! September is the last month that you could catch a ferry and go see the glaciers, well worth the trip.

You would have to fly to the viewing area

Just a thought to enjoy your Alaska trip
