Default Fashion Week Shoes: Alexander McQueen

Unless you weren’t already convinced of Alexander McQueen’s dark genius by the pictures of the clothing from his show, we submit to you: the shoes.

What we got from this collection (among other things) is perhaps the most ostentatious, progressive approach to footwear that we’ve ever seen from a major designer, at least in recent memory. The shoes were, on average, a full ten inches tall with huge platforms in the front to make them at least somewhat functional for walking. I pray for the models’ poor little ankles, but it was worth it to see these looks in their full form.

They came in three main varieties: first, ultra-high booties that looked more like prosthetic lobster claws than shoes you might see on the racks at Neiman Marcus, in keeping with the apocalyptic-aquatic theme of the show. These came in exotics, smooth leathers, and a variety of exterior embellishments, including shards of turquoise. The second type were booties that looked like something a resident in Wall-E’s post-apocalyptic Earth might wear. The heels were covered in an amalgamation of industrial metal, creating perhaps the most wearable shoes of the collection. The third type were intricately carved porcelain platforms that were reminiscent of a coral reef, held on to the foot by clear plastic straps.

These are the shoes that a mermaid would wear, if a mermaid had feet. Luckily, the ones in McQueen’s show did.

Holy macaroni! WTF is that?

Beyond the craziness, I see a Sea theme here. The ones of top look like a vase or some sort of coral, a twisted colorful shell, and a mermaid tail. A lot of the shoes posted look like crab claws to me. And the more industrial-looking boot-like ones could've been made with parts of a sunken ship. WTH is he thinking? Pirates of the Caribbean? And how, oh, how can the models walk on those? Talk about a need for multiple dress rehearsals...

They're nuts, but I like them. They're interesting and waaaaay past funkAy

OMFG, some of these are extravagant to say the least, some good, some bad. I'm not really a shoes girl by any means, but I really have to really say something. I've never seen anything like a lot of these in my life, not even in sci-fi films. I can't imagine anyone ever buying these unless the whole overplayed "too much going on" doesn't apply to shoes with such consumers. Even though the bulk of them have a whole lot of details, out of these, there are a lot that are nicely put together like a puzzle or fit a theme, so it does not at all look really messy, sloppy, whatever you want to call it.

Having said that, I do really, really like the "coral reef", fish-fin heels! I almost want to buy them just for the sake of having them to show off like works of art.

Edgy and conceptual are not even enough to describe those shoes. IMO they belong to the runway. I feel bad for those models that they had wear such high heels and performed at the same time, and made sure they don't slip and fall.

Wow- I love them- not actually to wear; but to look at, and for originality.
Particularly the 'lobster claw' ones, they are so cartoonish.

may as well bring back foot binding...although here we do have a choice: not to wear them!
they remind me of bondage shoes, the ones that look like a ballet point shoe but have a heel.

TACKY! All of them. And I agree, extremely ugly. Those poor models must have their feet aching by the end of the day. It must have taken a lot of practice to walk in those hideous shoes.
